Imagine this crazy scenario:
A quick deal arises in town, or you need to meet up with someone you haven’t seen in a while, or you need to go and fend for your family, but here’s the catch: you need a piece of paper that is recognized by the police in order for you to leave your house and make any movements.
Okay, so maybe you don’t even need to imagine this situation because we’ve lived through these strict restrictions. We know this life all too well. Its no surprise then that Zimbabweans were filled with much relief when these restrictions were lifted.
Fast forward to about less than a month ago, the government might be rethinking their decision of lifting lockdown regulations. This is as a result of the negligence displayed by a large fraction of Zimbabweans. Whilst government has been heavily advocating for the wearing of masks, maintaining social distance, these calls have been disregarded by many. This has arouse a fear of another wave of the corona virus.
Regarding this issue, Chief Co-ordinator of the national response to the covid-19 pandemic, Agnes Mahomva, had this to say:
“As government we always get concerned when people get complacent because that is what led to the second wave.
But our main defense line, now that we have the vaccine, we are speeding up the programme to ensure that we immunize our target number as a way of minimizing further infections”
What are your thoughts on the growing complacency of citizens on this issue?
Is another lockdown justified?
