Those with an entrepreneurial spirit are said to be able to identify problems in society that they can solve and make money while at it. Some of these problems are so simple at first glance that one might not have even realise they can bring in money. One such example is the man who has established a fast growing sugarcane peeling business.
Entrepreneurs in struggling nations have been coming up with innovative business ideas. Such is the case with the snake breeding business. No its not what you think. Many are quick to associate snakes with witchcraft but this is not the case this time.
Snake breeders keep a number of snakes that they tame. They then export these snakes to Europe where each snake is bought for 60 euros or more.
Why would people buy snakes, you may ask.
Speaking to the media, Deo Nzigiyimama a Burundi snake breeder, broke down the business model. He said the following:
“We make bags and belts. When we collect the snakes from the forest, we put each one in its cage, we take care of their cleanliness. In Europe, a snake can cost 60 euros. If you have 100 heads, it’s a business”
In addition to all of the above, snake meat is another way Nzigiyimama generates income from the business. He even encouraged youths to start this business. As he has been running the business for a while, he has already seen the fruits of his labour. The business has also attracted tourists to Bujumbura where most private snake farms are found.
Of course people will still shy away from this business given the image snakes have in society. Some are shaped by the experiences relating to snakes they’ve seen or heard. For instance, when a snake attacked a man during intimacy, that drew much attention from worried and scared individuals.
