The recent Olympic Games held in Germany saw a new record being created in the women’s only for the 10km race. A month later, the new world record holder, Agnes Tirop, was stabbed to death and her husband has been labelled a major suspect.
Tirop’s Athletic History
The world generally acknowledges Kenya’s athleticism. Kenya has produced a number of world record holders including the infamous former serial world record holder Usain Bolt.
Agnes Tirop was no exception. She won bronze medals in the 10,000m at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships and finished 4th in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Games. Just last month she broke the world record for the 10 km race by 28 seconds at 30:01. Unfortunately, Tirop didn’t get to celebrate this victory for long or have the opportunity to defend her title.
Stabbed To Death
Tirop was reported missing by her father on Tuesday 12 October 2021. The police in her area went to her place and found her dead on her bed in a pool of blood. She had been stabbed in the neck as they identified what seemed to be a knife wound.
Her husband Emmanuel Rotich, was nowhere to be found following this incidence. However, on Thursday the police managed to get hold of him and he has since been thrown behind bars. He was found after ramming his car into a lorry, saying he was trying to flee the country. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations have stated that Rotich is being questioned by detectives at Changamwe police station for details on the murder.
On a lighter note in Kenya, an MP hosted a launch ceremony for the unveiling of a TV set.
