Netflix has announced that they will be charging an extra amount for subscribers who will share their accounts with people who do not live in the same household.
A common trend among Netflix subscribers is to share their passwords with friends and family that wish to stream movies and series on the platform. Netflix has had no issue with that all along.
Netflix product innovation director Chengyi Long explained in a blog post;
âWe recognize that people have many entertainment choices, so we want to ensure any new features are flexible and useful for members, whose subscriptions fund all our great TV and films,â
Donât panic just yet the idea will first be implemented in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru over the coming weeks and the results will determine when and how it will be implemented in other areas. Netflix will add an option to add as many as two people to âsub-accountsâ at a monthly fee of $2 to $3.
Netflix said it will allow people already sharing accounts to transfer profiles and viewing history information to new sub-accounts. Netflix has been heading in this direction for a while now and this could either encourage people to create their own accounts or use other streaming platforms.
