Following the announcement that restaurants are allowed to reopen at 50% capacity, the resuming of sports was also permitted.
This announcement came as a relief for athletes like soccer players who haven’t played since the lockdown of March 2020 began. Speaking on this Mangwana said :
“all sporting activities will now resume and observe standard operating procedures”
The Sports and Recreation Commission(SRC), which is responsible for regulating sporting activities in Zimbabwe has mentioned that although various athletes are ecstatic about this announcement, they still have to wait for the final go ahead.
The SRC had this to say:
“The actual resumption of these sports activities is subject to the relevant National Sport Associations (NSA’s) being notified in writing by the Sports and Recreation Commission that they have satisfied the set criteria for resumption,
The medium and high-risk sport codes shall resume only after they have demonstrated their ability to meet the set standard operating procedures and protocols for the containment of Covid-19 which were communicated on Monday 15th March”
Final announcements are still to be made regarding which sports can resume activity.
