]]>Agribank, which was focused on lending to farmers has been rebranded to the just launched AFC Holdings. This move has been set to cover a larger scope than Agribank used to. Other services to be incorporated are Insurance and Commercial Banking. AFC Holdings has four subsidiaries.
The other four subsidiaries and their functions are as follows:
This move works in line with the president’s aim to make Zimbabwe the bread basket of Africa once again as he mentioned at a virtual meeting with other African Heads of States yesterday.
While others are praising this re-branding others are calling this recycling of deadwood. This is because AFC was infact in existence starting in the 1970s as a vibrant bank helping white Rhodesian farmers. It later collapsed due to alleged unpaid loans by government officials.

]]>There are various factors that were pointed out that were said to attest to the truthfulness of this statement. These include the high yields experienced in the agricultural sector this year. This high yield was not attributed to the good rainfall only but more on the intentional efforts by government to achieve a “Prosperous and Empowered Upper Middle Income Status by 2030.”
One of the government contributions to the agriculture sector that saw great results is the Pfumvudza concept. Pfumvudza is a technique used to ensure that small pieces of land produce very high yields through the use of the correct agronomic practices.
In addition to the above measures, the government also set in place systems to minimise the challenges that arise from a lack of finances in the farming sector. President Mnangagwa had the following to say:
“To mitigate the challenges associated with agriculture financing, the Agricultural Finance Corporation has been established. Models of strengthening existing contract farming arrangements are constantly reviewed to increase overall agriculture productivity, profitability, and fairness, over and above the access to finance aspect.”
More initiatives are being set in place in order to climate-proof farming and ensure higher agricultural yields all year round.
This virtual meeting was also attended by the President of the African Development Bank(ADB) ,Dr Akinwumi A Adesina, president of the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), Dr Gilbeft F Houngbo, executive chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Right Hon Tony Blair and chief executive officer of the Dangote Group, Mr Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

]]>The post Breaking: Maize producer prices increased to RTGS$ 726 Per Tonne, Cotton RTGS$1 950 appeared first on Provoker Magazine.
]]>Maize and other small grains are now priced at RTGS$726 per metric tonne, that is almost double the price that was paid last season which stood at $390 per tonne.
Cotton is now priced at a whopping RTGS$1950 per metric tonne, wheat RTGS$1089.69 per tonne and soya bean is now pegged at RTGS$918 per tonne.
In a bid to avoid prices increases the government has also maintained the 39.5% subsidy on the selling price to millers.
Now the question is how will the markets react to this increase, the government is hoping that this move will result in increased agricultural production, and hence boost national food security.
