He shared insights on the farming sectors including, the traditional grains, livestock condition, tobacco, cotton and maize.

Basera shared the following on a twitter thread on his page:

“Traditional Grains hectarage surged by 15% (sorghum) and 26% (pearl millet) in 2020/21 cropping season vs 2019/20”

“Cattle Herd mortality spiked down from 12% in 2019 to 4.2% in 2020. The general livestock condition is FAIR TO GOOD.”

“The YOY marginal increase of 0.64% in the National Herd to 5.6 million in 2020 demands immediate acceleration of the implementation of the Livestock Recovery and Growth Plan.”

“Tobacco hectarage surged by 7% to 125 177Ha in the 2020/21 cropping season from 117 049 Ha in the 2019/20 season.”

“Area under Cotton (the white gold) increased by 40% from 170 622Ha in 2019/20 to 239 619 Ha in 2020/21 cropping season.”

“Maize area by farming sector. Smallholder (CA and SSCA) maize farming continue to dominate with over 60% contribution to 2020/21 maize hectarage.”

 

“Over 90% (1.7m Ha) of the 2020/21 maize crop was planted in the optimum time of planting, Oct to Dec. The general maize crop condition is FAIR TO GOOD.”

“Area planted to maize by province in the 2020/21 cropping season.”

The above figures are reportedly acquired by the means of ward based crop assessment programs carried out by AGRITEX(Agricultural, Technical and Extension Services). AGRITEX is an agricultural extension system in Zimbabwe. In accordance with the Ministry of Lands, agriculture, water, climate and Rural Settlement, AGRITEX’s main aim is to:

“service the needs of different farmer clientele by generating, providing and promoting agricultural programmes that  enhance competitive and economically viable productivity on a sustainable basis, through administration, extension, training, liaison, coordination and regulatory services.”
