As they should! Well, that’s how some people are viewing the situation. Others are wondering why in the world people’s rights are still being attacked in this time.

The Situation

The Zimbabwe Ezekiel Gutu University is recently said to have barred 5 students from becoming a part of the Student’s Executive Council after they failed to speak in tongues. This was after they had gone through the entire process of filling in applications to be considered for the Council.

The student’s dean Zunguze notified the students on the 5th of November 2021 of their disqualification. He stated that because they had not shown any evidence of speaking in tongues, they were not born again or spirit filled and could not qualify to lead any students.(In accordance with Section 9 of the Ezekiel Gutu University student handbook.)

The issue has been taken up to the High Court for Zimbabwe and the students will be represented by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Forum.

The School Is Right

One school of thought has suggested that the University had every right to act in this way. The reasoning that has been brought up to support this is that the school has made it clear what they stand for and who they are from the beginning.

Ezekiel Gutu University is the first Pentecostal University in Zimbabwe. Being Pentecostal, they emphasise direct personal experience of God through baptism with the Holy Spirit and state that this baptism in the Holy Spirit enables a Christian to “live a Spirit-filled and empowered life”. That said, some people have suggested that they had every right to stand for and enforce THEIR BELIEFS in THEIR PREMISES.

The School Is Wrong

Denying students the opportunity to compete for leadership roles like any other student was not a matter taken lightly by some. For them, it boils down to one word, DISCRIMINATION. This was also considered to be imposing of their beliefs on the students.

One argument was that, if they willingly accepted the students into their University and also gladly accept their money then they should also afford them all the opportunities given to every other student.

Some people don’t even think having someone who is so called “spirit-led” is not at all effective. This view point came about as a results of various activities by other churches including the recent church shooting which was allegedly organised by one of the church leaders.

Biblical Perspective

Usually one does not include religion when it comes to debates, however since this matter is deeply rooted in religion perhaps that side ought to be considered too. We’ll do so in brief.

Some commentators on this matter pointed out to scriptures that suggest that although many might say they are Christians, it is not possible for everyone to be able to speak in tongues.

But the manifestation of the spirit is given to each one for a beneficial purpose. For to one is given speech of wisdom through the spirit, to another speech of knowledge according to the same spirit, to another faith by the same spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one spirit, 10 to yet another operations of powerful works, to another prophesying, to another discernment of inspired expressions, to another different tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues.11 But all these operations are performed by the very same spirit, distributing to each one respectively just as it wills.

1 Corinthians 12 vs 7-11

Given this some have suggested that the school is even wrong, not only from a legal point of view but also from a biblical one.

Do you agree with this view?

Are you an intolerant person?
Many of us don’t know we are intolerant and would make absolute dictators if we ever had power over the lives of others. If you are a person who gets angry when someone says something you don’t agree with, even on Social Media, then you have an intolerant streak in you.
Think hard and count to at least 1,000 before you speak up or write with anger, whether on Social Media or anywhere.
You have heard the expression: “Let’s agree to disagree”.
The moment you have to respond to someone’s viewpoint with a torrent of abuse, you are actually displaying intolerance in full public view to the whole world.
Engage, debate, but don’t abuse the other party.
Being on this platform means that I have to listen to ideas that sometimes may not be ready yet, but I don’t bash the person on the head; I just try to engage them in a way that helps them and others. Unless of course, they are being intolerant…
Being passionate about an issue does not mean you are necessarily right. It just means you are passionate about your side of the argument. That is all.
Let’s fight all forms of intolerance. Most of them are right there in our own homes.
“Be slow to become angry, for human anger is never a legitimate tool to promote God’s righteous purpose”…
My dearest brothers and sisters, take this to heart: Be quick to listen, but slow to speak. And be slow to become angry, for human anger is never a legitimate tool to promote God’s righteous purpose. [James 1:19-20]
Think about all the things you are angry about?
“Why are you so, so angry?”
There are some people out there who are so, so angry about a lot of things, and a lot of people. Some are even angry with God Himself!
Another version of that verse says: “The purpose of God is not established in the anger of man…”
Yes, we all get angry now and again, but when you allow your anger to just simmer and explode day after day, venting and venting, you need to be careful.
It will eventually consume you personally or lead you to take an action that will cause harm to others. Even as a Christian, I’m not justified in being angry with people who don’t “see” what I’m seeing. Or don’t agree with me.
I have seen Christians shouting at other Christians in church service…
What is that? What is the matter with you?
Come on!
“Mutual tolerance is a necessity for all time and all races”. Mahatma Gandhi
Without tolerance, even and especially across big divides of many kinds, we will never ever build Africa’s century.
That does not mean passively “tolerate” injustice, inequality, abuse, racism, and the like. It means “two wrongs do not make a right”. As entrepreneurs keep focused on innovative solution seeking, not the opposite.

Toyin Lawani, a celebrity stylist & CEO at Tiannah’s Place Empire wore a very controversial nun outfit that left the internet ablaze with anger and disgust. She took the concept of a nun outfit, which is perceived by those of the Catholic denomination as a representation of chastity and purity. The designer in the picture showcased nothing close to these values.
She wore this racy outfit to the premiere of Toyin Abraham’s movie. The premiere of the movie titled The Prophetess held on Sunday. The theme of the premiere which was clearly church inspired outfit saw entertainers showing off their religious side. But Lawani‘s outfit was dramatic as she slitted her Nun outfit up to her privates.
The internet hailed all sorts of threats to her for disrespecting the Christian religion. Others stated that she couldn’t have made the same fashion statement using Hijab.
A defiant Lawani fired back at critics; saying in one of her responses: “This is my page and I will continue to post what I want and love.”
