Nelson Chamisa president of the Citizen’s Coalition for Change political party today outlined ways that he feels Zimbabwe’s economy could be saved. His ideals include full dollarization and embracing smart agriculture among others.

Below is the full Twitter thread:

“The economy is tanking and Zimbabweans are suffering at the hands of bad leadership, poor governance and porous economic policies. As the alternative government, we propose the following to be considered and adopted:

There is a crisis of confidence in the market, citizens are suffering from the price hikes and deepening poverty level. All gvt policies must be demand driven, inclusive &fully consultative. The recent attack on CZI position paper by Gvt is regrettable and must never be tolerated!

Stop the auction system and go for full dollarisation – this will immediately remove distortions, multiple pricing, arbitrage, secure stability and save exporting companies from imminent collapse and help all businesses and economic agents to preserve capital.

In line with (3), we should immediately work on a de-dollarisation road map which is inclusive and evidence based and build on consensus as opposed to command economics and threatening businesses with statutory instruments.

Embrace SMART agriculture with a view to foster more active role of the market & gvt providing oversight to minimise distortions caused by agricultural subsidies. The commodity exchange should be used as an effective vehicle for funding & marketing of agricultural commodities.

To address the economic challenges (such exchange rate spiral and inflation) caused by short term finance on infrastructure, gvt must use long long term finance such as diaspora bonds (eg Ethiopia-the Grand Renaissance Dam) and public private partnerships to fund infrastructure

Stop corruption and save US$2.8bn,being the US$1.8bn through illicit financial flows and US $1bn wasted in state owned enterprises and line ministries). This money,if saved, is a real game changer.Greedy, indiscipline and corruption stand as the biggest threat to the economy!

We must embrace a genuine social contract, which is inclusive to move forward as a nation. Also Expedite a Pre-Election Pact on elections & reforms, constitutionalism and respect of human rights so we restore our integrity in the family of nations.Genuine dialogue is key!”

One man has been reported dead and 17 others injured after a mob armed with machetes, iron bars, bottles and other weapons invaded a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) rally.

The rally was held in Kwekwe on Sunday and the mob attacked the people from the back whilst Nelson Chamisa was delivering a speech. Whilst Chamisa’s security rushed to protect him from harm, the CCC youth were encouraged to retaliate and stand their ground as the attackers were not a part of them.

The CCC youth managed to repel the gang who were suspected to be ZanuPF supporters. The supporter who was killed on Saturday afternoon has been identified as Mbongeni Ncube. He was 35 years of age. CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere accused Zanu-PF of causing the violence.

“Sadly, one person has suffered fatal injuries at the Yellow Kwekwe where Zanu PF unleashed an orgy of violence in the middle of President Chamisa’s speech. The deceased (name withheld) was pierced in the side. The Zanu-PF thug used a spear. Rest in Peace.

Red Cross staffers have administered first aid to our bleeding supporters following violent attacks by Zanu-PF thugs wielding machetes and iron bars. Many were hospitalized.

President Nelson Chamisa has called on our members to remain calm. Police are protecting the thugs.” she said

Mahere also said in another Tweet:

“Zanu-PF thugs have unleashed an orgy of violence onto our supporters at the Yellow Kwekwe rally. Many have been brutally injured. The attackers charged at our supports with metal bars and weapons.”

The incident in Kwekwe was not the first time a CCC was interrupted. On Saturday, police fired teargas and used water cannons to disperse his supporters in Gokwe. The police justified tear-gassing and beating CCC supporters by saying the rally was banned and that they lacked the personnel to supervise the rally properly.

The events come after the country’s vice president Constantino Chiwenga said the ruling party would “crush” the opposition like one would crush fleas with a rock.
