I’m sure we can all agree that bundle prices are insane. Econet (and other Internet Service Providers) have been having a price hike competition due to the ever-increasing Bond-USD exchange rates.

The *143* USSD shortcode has a new option called Smart USD Bundles. This option has Voice, SMS, Data and COMBO bundle choices. The bundles are quite reasonably priced. For example, the 10GB under Smart USD Bundles costs USD$10 but under the normal Private Wi-Fi option 8GB cost RTGS $4 320. With an average exchange rate of RTGS$220 to USD$1 the 10GB, Smart USD Bundle costs RTGS$2 200 and one would need to change USD$20 to buy the ordinary 8GB Private Wi-Fi bundle.

Many people on social media platforms are asking Econet Wireless how they can purchase the Smart USD Bundles since most people use RTGS in their Ecocash accounts. Econet has not yet officially let people know how they can purchase the new bundles in the form of ads or posts. An Econet customer services employee responded to an enquiry on Twitter by saying;

“Hi @rastawepabuse, you need to visit any Econet shop to make the purchase or you can use your FCA wallet if you have funds in your account. To purchase the bundles kindly dial *143# and select Smart USD bundles, and choose the bundle package you want and confirm. ^AIH”

So it looks like one needs to make a deposit into their Ecocash FCA account or buy USD airtime at Econet shops to purchase the bundles. These bundles are not necessarily cheap but they are better priced.

Full list of prices under the Smart USD Bundles *143* option

  1. Voice

Bundle of Joy 30 mins USD $0.5

Bundle of Joy  60 mins USD $1

Bundle of Joy 320 mins USD $5

  1. Data

Whatsapp Monthly 900MB USD $3

Whatsapp Monthly 1650MB USD$5

Compared to other mobile network operators in Zimbabwe, Econet seems to have succeeded in maintaining the reputation of the most expensive data tariffs. Nonetheless, this track record still doesn’t seem to have prepared people enough for the recent spike in their data prices.

View the new wifi data prices below.

Private WIFI Data Bouquets:

These prices are an increase to almost twice the previous price with the 8GB bundle having cost $1560 before this change. At this rate, internet access is fast becoming a privilege in this country. This goes against the vision of Econet’s founder himself who said the following on his Facebook page:

The current hike in data prices is also very ironic considering the sweet deal made by Econet Global’s subsidiary which Strive Masiyiwa recently celebrated. The deal serves the purpose of bringing cheap internet to DRC and other Central African countries.

Although it’s not so, one would almost think that Zimbabwe is the one incurring the cost of such a deal.

Below are some reactions of Zimbabweans with regards to these recent data tariffs changes:

But then again, in the words of controversial journalist Hopewell Chinono, you’re not being forced to use Econet.

What are your thoughts?

Scammers have now targeted the largest mobile network operator, Econet. The scammers have created a page with the Econet logo and cover, even the name except the verification of course, Econet Zimbabwe’s actual Facebook page is verified plus the fake page has zero followers.

A screenshot of the real Econet facebook page

The page undoubtedly aims to target the increasingly data hungry Zimbabweans off guard. The fake Econet page is promising Zimbabweans 15GB of data on sign up and we all know Econet would never do that in their lifetime, that is how we knew the page was fake.

So when one decides to signup they are taken to a website called Jinaka.com(above) which was made to look like Facebook. Don’t panic yet. We also entered fake credentials to see what happens so that you don’t have to. A user is simply redirected to more fake webpages with ads, but at this stage your credentials would have been taken and no 15GB of data was sent to you.

Be careful people!

There is nothing more frustrating than paying for internet you don’t even use because it has a time limit, particularly during this Covid-19 era where an urgent lockdown can be announced anytime.

It seems TelOne has finally heeded the call, the days of your internet package expiring after 30 days are finally behind us, but this is nothing new though the internet service provider ZOL already offers rolling data services to their customers.

The country’s only fixed line service provider, announced the news on their Facebook page much to the cheers of the masses.

Perhaps the bigger fish in the room is the cost of internet, it has become the norm for most internet service providers, to review prices whenever the United States dollar coughs.
