]]>The post Will Free Education Be Possible By 2023 As Promised By President Mnangagwa? appeared first on Provoker Magazine.
]]>Due to the effects of Covid 19, many children have not been learning and some have even had to drop out of school. The pandemic took a toll on both the education system and the parents of schoolgoers.
Schools have been forced to adapt to e-learning and that is if they even have the resources to deliver. In the event that schools were able to deliver, many students could not afford the facility.
The President spoke about the number of school dropouts being the major motivator towards the decision to make education free for primary schools. He also said all children will receive tablets for e-learning purposes funded by the government.
While this is a great cause, how realistic is the 2023 target? As it stands government is failing to pay teachers well. The past couple of months has been spent negotiating with teachers to go to work even though the civil servants feel that their salaries are way below what they deserve.
How will the government manage to make extra funds available for running the schools without students paying school fees? How will it also buy tablets for students if it cannot buy tablets for teachers? We are already 3 months into the year 2022. This leaves the president 9 months to deliver on this promise.
Will the government in the next nine months manage to adjust teachers’ salaries and make a budget available to maintain schools without the need for school fees payments by parents…and also buy each primary scholar textbooks and a tablet? It seems like a mammoth task and the government will need a mammoth strategy to match.

]]>The government of Zimbabwe has now roped in the Public Service Commission to force the hand of the teachers who, through their various labour bodies have rejected offers from the government so far, the latter is also digging in with the President, ED Mnangagwa vowing not to pay teachers the US$540 salary they are demanding.
The PSC has issued an ultimatum to teachers essentially if they do not report for duty by the 22nd of February they are deemed to have resigned, with the PSC starting the recruitment of new teachers shortly after that.
Below is the full statement from the PSC.
The opening of schools has brought to the fore the importance of safeguarding the inalienable right of every Zimbabwean child to an education as provided for in Section 75 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
It is in this context that Government has, in its efforts to improve the welfare of its workers, continued to engage with workers’ representatives in the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC).
The NJNC meeting held on the 11th of February 2022 welcomed the directive by His Excellency President E.D. Mnangagwa to improve the Government offer to its employees through a combination of monetary and non-monetary incentives.
In the category of non-monetary benefits, teachers would benefit from a school fees exemption to cover three children per family.
Plans were also announced to construct institutional accommodation for teachers at or around the school premises. The total would be 34 000 units over a five-year period.
Government shall maintain the current vehicle duty-free privilege for civil servants.
Advancement awards within grades, which had been suspended for some time, will be resumed with immediate effect to recognize seniority.
Government notes with concern that, in spite of the significant steps it has taken to improve conditions of service, working with the Apex Council, some teachers continue to absent themselves from work, with some reporting for duty but not working.
This has had the effect of depriving learners of their inalienable right to education as well as prejudicing parents of their significant investment in their children’s education.
This behaviour on the part of some teachers is all the more distressing in view of the fact that it is coming at a time when learners have already lost more than a month of learning in 2022 alone due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and were therefore looking forward to the opportunity to catch up with their studies.
Such behaviour cannot be tolerated as it will have a lasting, negative impact on an entire generation.
It is in this context that Government is taking the following measures:
All teachers, deputy heads and heads of schools who do not report for duty by Tuesday 22 February 2022 will be deemed to have resigned from the service;
- Those reporting for duty but not teaching will also be deemed to have resigned;
- All those who will have in that manner so resigned and were occupying institutional accommodation are expected to vacate the same with immediate effect;
- Unemployed trained teachers, university and college graduates in the sciences, engineering, technical, vocational areas and other disciplines who are interested in joining the teaching profession should ensure that they are registered at the nearest district education offices as the recruitment process shall begin soon after the 22nd of February 2022; and
- Those deemed to have resigned shall not be eligible for this recruitment.
Government has taken the position that it will now work with those who demonstrate their commitment by performing their duties at all times to serve the nation.
In terms of Section 75 sub-section 4 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, concerning the right to education, the Government of Zimbabwe has already taken reasonable legislative and other measures, within the limits of the resources available to it, to achieve the progressive realisation of the right to education.

]]>The post Government wants to rename Prince Edward High School ‘Murenga Boys’ and that’s just the beginning appeared first on Provoker Magazine.
]]>I’m all for renaming stuff but some ideas should remain just that…ideas!
Now the concept of renaming institutions after own heroes is noble, some institutions’ history must also be preserved, else how do we know where we are going, if we don’t know where we are coming from, but the list (below) just doesn’t end there, some of the proposed names are also puzzling.

Oriel Boys is set to be renamed Highlands Boys and Oriel girls, you guessed it HighlandsGirls, what is really the purpose of this, if I may ask?
In all high-density suburbs where schools normally have the same name the only difference being the digit at the end, for example, Kuwadzana No 1, only the ones with a will retain the previous names without the digit, the rest will be renamed.
Let’s also look at the costs involved with this idea, both to the schools and the community.
Imagine the prestigious Prince Edward, which over the years has received perks based on its name will have to settle for ‘Murenga Boys’
An easier option would be to build new schools and give them names, don’t you think, what do you make of this name change?

]]>The statement uttered by an educated woman sparked some controversy in the social media streets. She suggested without shame that a woman is to be educated for the sake of her husband. As you might have guessed, she was bashed left, right, and center.
Before we share what people’s opinions are on such a matter, here’s the life story shared by the lady in question:

So, not only is a degree an asset to the women’s husbands, but according to this lady, university campuses are there to help women find husbands. It was this story that triggered several people. Many didn’t shy away from expressing their disappointment. View some of the comments relating to this matter below:

We wonder if advocates for girl’s education eg Strive Masiyiwa, among others, have had thoughts like this cross their minds in their quest to educate girls. That would certainly change the narrative on these matters.
What are your thoughts?

]]>Zimbabwe is counted as a country with one of the highest literacy rates in Africa. That in itself, arguably, reflects on the way the majority of the population values education. So why are most citizens sulking at this decision? Let’s dive into the reasoning behind those sentiments.
For starters, the already high unemployment rate in addition to the retention of many more people as a result of the lockdown measures, meant that a devastating number of Zimbabweans had and still have no income. Schools reopening has added an extra expense to their empty pockets. Where will they get the money for school fees? Where will they get the money for school uniforms? Where will they get money for the lunch their kids will be expected to carry?
Alright, maybe we can argue that since lockdown measures have been relaxed, people are now able to find ways to make the needed money and pay the fees. But, is it that easy to solve this problem? Well, to answer that question, consider the story of a little boy we will refer to as Nhamo who attends a primary school in Mufakose.
The announcement is made that schools will reopen. Nhamo’s parents are quick to act, mom borrows money so she can buy some stock for her “musika” and dad goes back to his job as a plumber. They raise the needed fees and Nhamo is able to go back to school. Or so they think.
Nhamo returns home on the first day of school to announce that he was told to only come back to school when he has paid school fees even from the previous terms he wasn’t in school due to the lockdown restrictions. Nhamo’s parents hadn’t been working then and now that they can work, they can only afford to live hand to mouth. It is almost impossible for them to raise that money.

The story of Nhamo is the story of Chipo, Patie, Tatenda and many other boys and girls in the country. No wonder many Zimbabwean parents are quivering at the idea of schools reopening at such a time.
However, there is the other part of the population that is able to handle the expenses that come with schools reopening. They have different worries. Will our children be safe from Covid19?
This concern was addressed by the government. Following a Cabinet meeting, information minister Monica Mutsvangwa stated that,
“There shall be rotational; school attendances in classes where learners cannot exercise social distancing. On days when children are not at school, learners would be engaged through strategies such as open distance learning and e-learning.”
Other measures such as checking of temperature and sanitizing are expected to be followed in school premises to mitigate the spread of the disease.
