]]>Last week the Vice President Mutale Nalumango told Parliament that Zambia will not entertain gay rights. The major reason stated for this is that Zambia is a Christian Nation.
Mrs Nalumango emphasised the following:
“We are a Christian Nation and that remains on the books. If this government at any one time wants gay rights, you will be the first to know but we are a Christian Nation, we continue to be who we are”
Following this announcement, the president of America who embraces gay rights, was quick to make his move too. Zambia had long been anticipating the meeting between President Hakainde Hichilema and Joe Biden. However, the meeting was abruptly cancelled.
Senior Zambia Diplomats close to Washington revealed that the meeting was cancelled following the VP Nalumango’s announcement on gay rights. They further indicated that this move was a clear message that the US would not support countries opposed to gay rights.
The Diplomats revealed that since the coming of President Hakainde Hichilema the Chargé d’Affaires David Young had indicated that Zambia was now ready to embrace gay rights. Their hopes are that the cancellation of the meeting has sent a clear signal to Zambia.
A number of African countries still don’t tolerate gays in their countries. For instance, Nigeria is said to have been recently threatened with travel and financial sanctions over the same issue.
Zimbabwe has also shown intolerance on the matter. A Saint Johns College School Board Chairman has previously had to resign over gay teacher scandal.
Even in America where gay rights are embraced, much noise surrounded the scene of the gay presidential candidate who kissed his lover on stage.

]]>The U.S government has done exactly that in one of his biggest political victories, Joe Biden has signed the COVID-19 Relief Bill a move that will see Americans receiving $1,400 each.
The bill provides for a direct payment of $1,400 for a single taxpayer, or $2,800 for a married couple who files jointly, and an additional $1,400 per dependent. So a family of four could receive $5,600. But not everyone gets the money. Married couples with adjusted gross incomes up to $150,000 a year are eligible for the full amount, and individuals with adjusted gross incomes up to $75,000 a year are eligible for the full amount.
The size of the payments is reduced for individuals earning between $75,000 and $80,000. And there are no payments for individuals earning above $80,000 a year. Similarly, there are partial payments for couples earning between $150,000 and $160,000, with no money for couples earning above $160,000 or their dependents.
Lucky Americans!

]]>Contrarily, the current president of the United States, Joe Biden has made use of a provision by this act that by now, has crushed any hopes of sanction removal. The National Emergency Act states that, should the President not which to lift the sanctions, he is to publish in the Federal Register and transmit to the Congress a notice stating that the emergency is to continue in effect beyond the anniversary date. This move is to be made within 90 days prior to the anniversary date of its declaration.

In a statement published on the white house website, Joe Biden had this to say,
“I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the enclosed notice stating that the national emergency declared in the Executive Order 13288 of March 6, 2003, with respect to the actions and policies of the certain members of the Government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe’s democratic processes or institutions is to continue in effect beyond March 6, 2021.”
So, in effect, the sanctions that were imposed on certain high profile individuals in Zimbabwe is still very much in effect. The reason for the US president’s decision to continue with the sanctions was also included in the statement. Biden remarked,
“President Emmerson Mnangagwa has not made the necessary political and economic reforms that would warrant terminating the existing targeted sanctions program. Throughout the last year, government security services routinely intimidated and violently repressed citizens, including members of opposition political parties, union members, and journalists. The absence of progress on the most fundamental reforms needed to ensure the rule of law, democratic governance, and the protection of human rights leaves Zimbabweans vulnerable to ongoing repression and presents a continuing threat to peace and security in the region”
Some of these members include the President Emmerson Mnangagwa and approximately 120 more high ranking persons.
