The post Too many questions on Johannesburg Mayor with Zimbabwean roots’ death. Zimbabweans react appeared first on Provoker Magazine.
]]>There was much uproar from South Africans when it came to light that Jolidee Matongo was the son of a Zimbabwean immigrant. Not much consideration was shown to the new Mayor’s abilities at the time of the uproar. However, Matongo seemed a very promising candidate for the role.
Unfortunately on his way back from work in Soweto, Matongo was involved in a fatal car accident on Sunday 18 September 2021.

Zimbabweans on social media were quick to rule out that this might have been an elimination. On the other hand, some South Africans blamed Zimbabwe for the crash saying that he was driving on a highway with no street lights as Zimbabweans had stolen them. Whatever the case, the hostility between the nations is clearer at a time like this.

All this is irrelevant. We are all human beings first, we are all africans 2nds and the other crap is just roots identity and citizenship, race. A human being has died tragically… It's sad. Condolences to his family because they are the only one who are truly heartbroken

I thought am the only one who think so. Either some ANC people saw that it stood no chance with him or he was going to expose some corrupt activities in the ANC. #JolideeMatongo #RIP brother

What a sad end to the promising Mayor’s life.

]]>The Mayor is being rejected despite the plans he has laid out that others have deemed excellent.
Watch Matongo outline his plans below:
The issue surrounding this rejection is that of the Mayor’s descent. The new mayor, Jolidee Matongo’s father is Zimbabwean and that seemed to spark the outcry. His father Edward Matongo moved to South Africa more than 50 years ago. The Mayor was born in Soweto in 1979.
The City of Joburg Speaker Nonceba Molwele, has finally cleared the air over Matongo’s citizenship. She said the following:
βI want to put it into perspective that the executive mayor was born and brought up in the country β in Soweto, to be precise. He has been in different structures that fought for the liberation of the citizens and the people of South Africa. He is not a migrant. He is born of a migrant. His dad was a legal migrant”
The descent backstory only seems to be a huge issue in South Africa where xenophobia is said to be rampant. In the UK, 8 members of parliament elected this year were Zimbabweans and they have been embraced by the nation based on their merit and not origins.
