President Cyril Ramaphosa has been surrounded by indigenous Khoisan activists for over 3 years. These Khoisan activists began a campaign in 2018 for the president to recognise their languages as official languages in South Africa. Okay, you’re probably wondering what any of this has to do with a weed garden.

The activists, who have been camped outside President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office for 3 years, are said to have been planting a weed garden there. This came to light when the police raided the activists camp site with sniffer dogs.

It seems to have been very important to then as the leader was seen clinging onto a large branch of weed as police dragged it across the Presidential lawn in Pretoria.

But…Its Just Weed, Right?

As the Khoisan leader was dragged and later arrested, some of the Khoisan activists are said to have expressed that the police were stupid men in uniform for arresting someone of a mere plant.South Africa’s legislation, seems to have no problem with weed.

In 2018, South Africa’s top court decriminalised the private and personal use of cannabis in a landmark case that pitted law enforcement agencies against advocates of the plant, known locally as dagga.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, that’s not the case for countries like Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Last year a Zimbabwean landed himself in hot soup for carrying 1 tonne of weed.
