The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) recently posted a statement directed to prepaid customers who have outstanding debts.

In the statement, ZEDTC explains that the 50% redemption on token purchases has not been able to retire the debt that people have over the years. The authority has expressed that they can no longer afford to have service delivery being compromised by the debt overhang.

The ZETDC goes on to say that a third of the remaining debt owed by prepaid customers must be paid up before making a purchase at the beginning of the month for the next three months. This measure is taken with the expectation that every outstanding debt will be cleared within the next three months.

ZETDC did not disclose what would happen in the event that people failed to clear their debt in the stipulated time. But what probably will happen is that they will cut off supply to their houses until the full amount is paid. It would be wiser for one to pay whilst the option to pay in instalments is still available.

Could this be an April Fools trick? Because how are the two companies even related? Suppose Telone supplies electricity meters on behalf of ZESA…on what grounds would they be acquiring them? And who would do the installations? April Fools?. What do you think?
