However, it is with relief that we receive the news that the symptoms they are currently experiencing are mild. The Presidency gave a statement on Monday 8 March stating the following:

“After experiencing mild symptoms that resemble Covid-19, President al-Hassad and first lady Asma al-Hassad took a PCR test, and the result showed that they are infected with the virus.”

As we wish the Syrian President and his wife a speedy recovery, we sincerely hope that his background in medicine in addition to other care they might be receiving will help them manage the situation well.

President Bashar al-Hassad once served as a doctor in the Syrian Army before attending postgraduate studies at the Western Eye Hospital in London, specializing in ophthalmology. He later became the 19th Syrian President in July of 2000.
