The Republic of Congo in question is not to be confused with the larger country, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They distinguish themselves using the name Congo-Brazzaville to avoid confusion. This Central African country is now experiencing the third wave of the coronavirus. In a bid to curb its spread, weddings have been banned.

The communications minister, Thierry Moungalla, delivered the devastating news for lover birds on national TV. It had been noticed that all ceremonies for civil, religious and traditional marriages and dowries paid no attention to covid regulations.

Activists are already descending upon this move. A Congolese local rights activist Tresor Nzila stated that the ban was “disproportionate and ineffective” and a “further attack” on liberties.

This measure is far different from that of Denmark which has removed all covid restrictive measures in a bid to fight the virus naturally.
