The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has intensified their prepaid water meter project they have revealed that they intend to roll out a thousand meters in Gokwe.
The suburbs that will be getting the meters include Green Valley, Cheziya, and Sesame 1 and 2. Various clients owe ZINWA $54 million in Gokwe and the introduction of the meters is expected to control water consumption and curb the accumulation of debt.
The project will be run in phases and 600 meters of the 1000 meters have been installed so far in the first phase. The meters are being installed at no cost to all clients except for government departments. Much like ZESA, those in arrears will have a percentage of their payments for prepaid water going towards settling their debt.
Many people hope that having these prepaid water meters will improve the current water crisis where people can go for weeks or months on end without water. This will also help with paying what one owes as most of the bills from ZINWA are estimated.
