You can imagine the horror and disgust on many people’s faces when a 7 year old girl died at the hands of her own father!
A Ugandan man, Kawempe who resides in Kampala was arrested over the death of his seven year old daughter. The man is said to have returned home from his bricklaying job at 7pm. Upon arrival, he asked Irene Nambalirwa, his 7 year old, if she had done her homework.
The grade two pupil who was studying at Eria Memorial Primary School in Lugoba, told her father that she had not. This lead to her being beaten to the point of death.
The girl resided with her father and stepmother. Her stepmother is said to have tried to restrain Kawempe from harming the child. She failed to do so and had to call upon neighbours to try and help stop her husband.
The neighbours immediately called upon the Child Protection Unit in Kawempe. The girl was immediately rushed to the hospital but unfortunately was reported dead when she arrived.
Its sad that these overreactions by parents are not new to society. Recently, a 14 year old girl had to seek a protection order from her father who beat her almost to death over virginity. No wonder corporal punishment is a very sensitive one and has people who have been working tirelessly towards its eradication.
For those children that are trying to find common ground with their African parents, we shared other people’s experiences and opinions on the matter.
