So it’s starting to feel a little like child’s play. The leaders of the two AFM churches are back in the wrestling ring. This time its not about the church property or leadership, its about the church name.
By Sunday 30 2021, AFM church goers had to choose whether they’d be attending AFM in Zimbabwe or AFM of Zimbabwe. This was because Reverend Chiangwa could not accept the courts’ ruling that he was not going to lead AFM.
So that matter seemed to be resolved right? Nope. Reverend Madawo, the rightful leader of AFM according to the courts’ ruling, has started another battle. He has sued Chiangwa for use of the name “Apostolic Faith Mission of Zimbabwe” saying that it misleads the congregants.
In addition to the name, Madawo wants AFM of Zimbabwe to be barred from using the AFM logo and symbols.
The urgent high court application filed by Rev Madawo read:
The temporary interdict is sought to interdict the church; from using a logo that is identical and /or similar to the AFM in Zimbabwe’s registered trademark in respect of church meetings and gatherings…
“From using the name ‘Apostolic Faith Mission of Zimbabwe’ which is similar to the applicant’s name ‘Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe.
“The use of the former amounts to a misrepresentation that is likely to mislead the public and the AFM in Zimbabwe’s congregants into believing that its church is similar to that of AFM of Zimbabwe,”
