The Home Secretary Officer for the United Kingdom, Priti Patel has made it her agenda to deport Zimbabweans. The move has caused quite a stir even among British MPs.
A charter flight due to fly on Wednesday might be halted immediately. This comes as a result of a letter sent to Priti Patel by some British MPs. 75 cross-party politicians have said that the conditions in Zimbabwe are deteriorating and it will not be safe for them to return. The letter stated that the charter flight set to return some Zimbabweans home must “urgently be halted.”
Another reason for halting the deportation was said to be as a result of fearing any spread of the corona virus. David Pountney, senior solicitor at the Greater Manchester Immigration and Asylum Unit, said one of his clients who is due to be deported had also reported that there was a Covid case in Brook House. The lawyer further stated that “Exporting Covid to poor countries does nothing to help prevent the spread of the pandemic.”
Perhaps some of the MPs that signed the letter to Priti Patel were those 8 with Zimbabwean origins that were recently elected.
