The Africa Wealth Report published by Henley & Partners in collaboration with New World Health is the continent’s annual benchmark for private wealth research and is now in its 7th year, providing a comprehensive review of the wealth sector in Africa, including trends among HNWIs (high-net-worth individuals), the luxury market, and wealth management.

According to this year’s report, the “Big 5” of private wealth are South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Morroco, and Kenya as they hold over 50% of the continent’s wealth. The total value of private wealth held in Africa is US$2.1 trillion and is expected to rise by 38% over the next 10 years.

Andrew Amoils, Head of Research at New World Wealth, explains that private wealth refers to all an individual’s net assets (property, cash, equities, and business interests) less any liabilities. He says;

“Africa is home to some of the world’s fastest-growing markets, including Rwanda, Uganda, and Mauritius. We forecast private wealth growth of over 60% in all three countries in the next decade, driven by especially strong performance in the technology and professional services sectors.”

There are currently 136,000 high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) with a private wealth of US$1 million or more living in Africa, along with 305 centi-millionaires worth US$100 million or more, and 21 US dollar billionaires.

Despite a tough past decade, South Africa is still home to over twice as many HNWIs as any other African country, while Egypt now has the most billionaires. Mauritius has the highest wealth per capita (average wealth per person) in Africa, at USD 34,500, followed by South Africa at USD 10,970 and Namibia at USD 9,320.

The report has shown Mauritius to be the fastest-growing wealth market in Africa, with projected growth of 80% over the next decade. This will also make it one of the fastest-growing high-income markets in the world over this period (in percentage growth terms), together with Australia, Malta, New Zealand, and Switzerland. By 2031, HNWI numbers in Mauritius are expected to reach over 8,000.

Zimbabwe is not mentioned anywhere in the report and it is understandable as the economy is currently very unstable and the majority of Zimbabweans live in poverty.

A lot of prices have been adjusted in Zimbabwe in recent weeks and the Russia-Ukraine war has been mentioned as a major reason. From fuel price hikes to mealie meal and most recently bread prices went up by 100%.

Many people have been bushing the war off as a lame excuse and wondering what the connection between Zimbabwe, Russia and Ukraine could be. After all the countries are thousands of kilometres away from Zimbabwe and separated by seas. That was until Tafadzwa Musarara the chairman of the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe disclosed an interesting fact.

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe imports wheat for the country and Russia and Ukraine are on the supplier’s list. Apparently, there is a consignment of Zimbabwe’s wheat that has been stuck in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol for weeks now and Musarara has expressed that the association is considering sourcing the wheat from other countries.

Musarara said that Australia is facing floods that are affecting their agriculture and they are considering sourcing wheat from Canada. One might wonder why Zimbabwe is importing wheat in the first place. Firstly wheat is apparently not a profitable crop for farmers in Zimbabwe. According to a critical review of the wheat industry in Zimbabwe by J Mutambara, A P Zvinavashe & E Mwakiwa, the average gross margin per hectare is negative, about – $461.00 and profits are about -$623.81 per hectare.

Zimbabwe imports wheat for two main reasons; to cover the deficit arriving from local wheat production so that we meet the 400 000 tonne national requirement and to enhance the quality of bread flour. After maize, wheat is the second most important food crop grown in Zimbabwe.

The above explanation gives one a clearer understanding as to why bread has gone up the way it has in Zimbabwe. But what is the solution? Why is Zimbabwe sourcing wheat so far? Are there no closer African countries that can supply the grain? We will reserve the last two questions for another day.

A solution may be found in the insights made by Andrew Matibiri the CEO of Zimbabwe Agricultural Society, a group responsible for promoting agricultural development in the country. Matibiri said the wheat shortages currently faced in Zimbabwe can serve as an opportunity for local farmers to produce more. In his words;

“This is an opportune time for our farmers to produce more, for the government and the private sector to work together, hand in hand, to support farmers who want to go into wheat production,

And thank God! We have been having some late rainfalls, which have been helping land preparations. So, all in all, the future of wheat production in this country is good.”

Matibiri expressed confidence in local farmers being able to produce sufficient amounts of wheat and possibly even export to other countries that may also be experiencing problems sourcing the grain. This would definitely ease the pressure on many Zimbabweans whose costs of living are being challenged daily by price hikes.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have arrested eleven people and confiscated numerous OVHD decoders in the process. The people were part of a TV-decoder smuggling ring.

Many people in Zimbabwe rely on Open View decoders for good content. They buy it once and they do not pay any subscription to keep it connected. This contravenes customs, trademark and copyright laws.

Raids and seizures are set to continue across the SADC region as they clamp down on content piracy. The Open View decoders air shows made by the SABC and eMedia in South Africa. The content made on the shows is intended for South African viewers and anyone else from outside South Africa that uses them is committing a crime.

The COO of Openview parent company eMedia Antonio Lee has applauded the ZRP saying that Zimbabweans should support local content and stop buying South African decoders. He said that anyone that purchases the Open View decoder in Zimbabwe is robbing the country of customs duty.

Further raids and investigations can be expected as 1094 records of Open View serial numbers were also confiscated during the raids. Lee also said that having the decoder in your home means you can also be arrested at any time as it is considered a serious offence.

Lee also said smuggled decoders will be disconnected from now on and people stand to run a loss if they buy illegal decoders and they are disconnected because of the criminal act.

Twin sisters Matlhogonolo and Masego Mphahlele popularly known as the Mphahlele Twins came second at the Redbull Basement Global Finals in Istanbul Turkey.

Red Bull Basement is a global initiative that seeks to discover new innovations by university students and showcase them to a global audience. The aim of the competition is to inspire innovative technology ideas that can drive positive change in their local communities.

The twins were interviewed on the SABC News and they got to share their inspiration and journey in inventing the x-ray glasses. They spoke about how their high school soccer teammate got hurt back in 2019 and they had to accompany her to the hospital where they had to wait for hours for an x-ray.

The Mphahlele twins with their x-ray glasses invention

The twins had the idea to invent a portable x-ray device shortly after the soccer accident. They first entered the Eskom Expo and unfortunately they didn’t win. The prototype took 2 years to build and the glasses have an infrared camera that takes pictures of the fracture that can be viewed on a small screen on the inside. The scans are then recorded and sent to the doctor.

The twins said the intention behind inventing the glasses is to improve the service at the hospitals starting with their hometown in Hammanskraal and reduce the big spaces occupied by bigger x-ray machines. They also envision their glasses being carried in the medical bags of nurses, paramedics in ambulances and even on the sports field.

Redbull gave the twins a mentor and covered the costs throughout the development process of the prototype. They got to go to Turkey for the Global Finals and they loved interacting with other young innovators. They came in second to contestants from the United States of America. Watch the full interview below.

The twins join other African inventors that have challenged and broken the general assumption that there can be no new inventions from Africa. In Zimbabwe, we have Maxwell Sangulani Chikumbutso who is a self-taught engineer. He is known for having developed a green energy technology that, he asserts, is revolutionary because it converts radio frequencies directly into clean and renewable energy.

Maxwell Chikumbutso

Maxwell Chikumbutso created a radio-frequency powered television. This means that there is no power cable and the TV is powered purely by radio waves similar to WiFi and Bluetooth. Watch more on Chikumbutso’s television invention below.

The long-standing relationship between Standard Chartered and Zimbabwe is about to come to an end as the firm plans to leave Zimbabwe.

Standard Chartered Group CEO Bill Winters announced that the firm will be exiting several countries in Africa and the Middle East in a bit to simplify its global structure. Which is a fancy way of saying running businesses in these areas is not worth the effort required to make them run successfully.

The group said it will leave Angola, Cameroon, Gambia, Jordan, Lebanon, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. It further announced that it will be closing its retail banking units in Tanzania and Ivory Coast, to focus only on corporate banking. The move is understandable as people are choosing to keep their money rather than bank it due to economic instability.

Bill Winters said;

“We are sharpening our focus on the most significant opportunities for growth while also simplifying our business.

We remain excited by the number of opportunities we see in the AME region, as illustrated by our new markets, but remain disciplined in our assessment of where we can deliver significantly improved shareholder returns.”

Standard Chartered was set up in Zimbabwe in the year 1892 and it is the oldest financial institution in Zimbabwe. This is an opportunity for other firms in the sector to have a bigger market share.

Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu has died with GBV being the cause of death as revealed by her sister Ms Favour Made.

According to Made Osinachi was in an abusive marriage with her husband Peter Nwachukwu. She went on to say Peter delivered a blow to Osinachi’s chest with his leg that caused blood clots in her chest. Friends of the late gospel singer testified about the instances of abuse they had seen.

Frank Edwards, another popular singer made an Instagram video alleging that he had seen the abuse. He said;

“One time in a studio, this man slapped her just because she wanted to record the song in Igbo against his will. She does not do anything on her own.

“She would say, please beg my husband. She was at his mercy. I didn’t know the intensity of what she was going through; I didn’t know how somebody would be jealous of the wife he claimed to love.

“There are a lot of stories where people told her this and that, but what I know was that the control was too much. The other time somebody wanted me to get her for an event, and I contacted her, but she said ‘beg my husband.’

“She couldn’t even tell people what she was going through. I only got to know because Aunty Joy contacted me to promote her song. That was when I got a glimpse into what was happening.”

There are also reports that Osinachi was in the hospital for five days before succumbing to her injuries. Her sister Ms Favor also said that Peter Osinachi’s husband did not alert the family that she was in hospital until she died and that is when he broke the news. She admitted to being aware of the abuse but said the late singer insisted on staying in the marriage with the belief that God would intervene.

Gender-Based Violence continues to be a struggle in Africa including in Zimbabwe. Most cases happen behind closed doors and our cultural setup frowns upon women who expose their husbands. Men equally do not share their abuse experiences because men are expected to be strong and sharing such experiences comes across as a weakness on their part.

Osinachi’s husband Peter Nwachukwu has been arrested as police investigate the cause of the singer’s death. people have reacted to the news on social media with mixed feelings. Some people feel that religious leaders must not encourage people to remain in abusive relationships. Osinachi leaves behind four children.

Anne Idibia and her brother Wisdom Macaulay are currently trending on social media after Wisdom exposed his sister Annie claiming that she abuses drugs.

For those of you that are not familiar with the name, Annie Idibia is a well-known Nigerian model, presenter and actress. She is married to the popular Nigerian musician 2Baba.

Annie Idibia and husband 2Baba

Wisdom recently took to Instagram to expose his sister Annie saying:

“Hello Nigerians, my name is Wisdom Macaulay, I am the elder brother of Annie Macaulay Idibia. I’m crying out for help at this moment because my life is been threatened. I have been working with my sister for sometime but she would never pay me my dues, she would rather send me N20,000 or N30,000…turn me to her slave and she can decide when she is angry to end it. Some weeks back, her husband sent me some money that I have begging him for years. The money wasn’t so much but I used it to settle my home. I have a wife from Imo State and I am yet to pay her bride price because I don’t have money.

Annie introduced me to drugs, hard drugs, Annie takes drugs, she is a drug addict, she takes it everyday, she is so violent, she doesn’t have peace with anyone, she fights everybody”.

He further added,

“I wasn’t around for 2 weeks and when I came back, she took everything from me. Annie lied on her story that I beat her in her husband’s house, how can I do that? Annie insults my wife, she insults everybody. I begged for her to give me money to buy a car so I can use it for Uber yet she refused, she doesn’t want me to stand on my feat.

Today, she drove me out of her house, and sent boys to waylay me when I took her car. Now my life is at risk. Annie is so ill tempered”.

Annie Idibia’s brother Wisdom Macaulay

The part that most people are shocked about is the drugs. But one can no help noticing that what really made him angry is fact that he is not content with what his sister does for her. He mentions not being given enough money and also requesting a car and not getting one. In this breath, Annie Idibia has responded on social media and she said:

“Oh Wizy, Why big bro Why Wisdom.

Why all these lies against your ONLY sister.. your younger sister, all i ever did was protect you and your kids.

Since we grew up bro, have you ever paid for house rent in your entire life?

You live in a 3bedroom flat fully furnished with everything you need for you and kids.

Wisdom you have 3 kids, have you ever paid for their school fees since they were born?

Your oldest child 9, for 9 years since your wife started making babies, have you ever paid for hospital bills for any of your kids?

Have you ever paid school fees.

Oh Wizy, how many cars have i bought for you since God started blessing me!

You say you work for me…how?

Where?? After Dad died, the car I had bought for him, told you to service the Jeep, you sold the car without telling me.

All I have was love you and your kids!

Every Xmas I make sure they all get something new…. I even make sure your wife isn’t aware!

How many times have I given you millions Wizy, but you are way too irresponsible, because I don’t have the heart to watch your kids go hungry!

Keep blackmailing me that you will kill yourself.

I have receipts on my online banking n proof.

WHy do you wanna destroy this lil career I have worked so hard to make?

This is where I get 80% of my money! Same money I used to send your kids to school. Pay your rent! All your hospital bills! Why would you want to destroy your own little sister?”

It’s common in the African culture for a successful person to be expected to pay black tax. Once a person gets a job, goes overseas, or becomes successful they are expected to bring the rest of the family along with them.

Despite Annie Idibia doing things financially for her brother and his family, he still expects her to continuously give him more money and even start a business for him. And although he claims to not have enough money to marry, he has three children.

It’s alarming how people are focused on the drug aspect of Wisdom’s “confession”. Did Wisdom really say those things to expose a drug addiction or is he an able-bodied man without a plan for his life besides riding on his sister’s fame?

We have seen these stories over the years. People commit adultery and end up stuck together, or in this case experiencing severe pain.

A student in Mongu Zambia is experiencing terrible pain after sleeping with a married man over the weekend.

The student named Mercy told BBN (Barotseland Broadcasting Network) in an interview that she felt as if fire was burning her private parts and she was failing to sit properly without opening her legs for fresh air. She also spoke about failing to urinate even though she felt a lot of pressure.

“It all started yesterday in the morning after I left the lodge in town. What really happened is that, I went with my friends to attend the Mongu music festival on Saturday night at Mongu stadium where musicians such as Chef 187, Bobby east and many Mbunga artists were performing.

Within the arena three guys approached us and we shared each one of them with my friends. We also went to continue partying at Shanaya club in town. After 02:00hrs my friends with their partners left the club and went to their respectively guys home.

We also left the club and went to check on a room but unfortunately all four lodges we found they were already full. We only managed to find a room at Hippo’s and we slept there. But after having sex, he told me that he was a married man although his wife was a jealousy type and also very violent. So he said we should play it very low by going to chill to far places away from Mongu town. I told him that I was also a student and needed some support of formal of upkeeps.

Around 05:00hrs he woke up and demanded for a morning glory and afterwards he said he was going home so that his wife shouldn’t notice that he slept out but from the club. He left me a K50 and said he was going to send me something before 10:00hrs.

After leaving the lodge around 09:00hrs, I started feeling so much pain inside my vagina but again considering the fact that his penis was too small, I doubted. The pain kept on growing reaching to the point of me failing to sleep well last night. It was too hot last night and I could feel fire burning inside my vagina and was forced sat on a dish of water. I went to the hospital in the morning but they saying maybe it’s just internal pains and only told me to get this type of medication. Still more , it’s even getting worse.

Around 11hrs, we went to see Dr Mushitu in Mabumbu area of Mongu and after telling him what transpired he said my issue it’s too complicated because the wife had put medicines to protect his husband penis that whoever sleeps with him shall never have peace with her vagina. He said I should go to Kalabo or Lukulu for proper treatment but again it’s too expensive because it’s to clean and remove the Ghost”

Efforts are being made to get Mercy further treatment with witch doctors. Is this a case of witchcraft or some infection/STI? We will never know.

It’s alarming how it’s becoming normal for many young students -even in Zimbabwe- to sleep around with hopes of gaining something financially. The married man gave Mercy 50 Kwacha which is roughly USD$2.70. It does not buy a morning after (she didn’t mention a condom) and medication. She did not mention the man sending her any more money and she mentions that she cannot afford any more treatments.

This incident could give clues on how the HIV virus continues to spread at the rate that it does. People simply do not fear for their health but rather prioritise their pleasure. The Mongu student is not even worried that she could be HIV positive or pregnant but she’s concerned about the pains so that her life goes back to normal. A UN report revealed that Zimbabwe has the third-highest number of HIV positive women in Southern Africa. With new inventions like the HIV prevention ring for women and the false confidence that could come from having it, such behaviour displayed by the Mongu student will get even worse. Will finding a cure for HIV benefit the moral integrity of our African society?

There was an time when women and girls didn’t have the right to much. Girls couldn’t go to school and women couldn’t work certain jobs.

In recent years we have seen the rise of the feminist movement. A group of women that take it upon themselves to fight injustice towards women and call for equality in all aspects of life.

The rise of the feminist movement played a key role in uplifting girls and women. Now there is very little that women cannot do. This new found confidence has caused some women to harass and be abusive towards men under the guise of activism.

Takura

A couple of weeks ago a woman called tanyadairies on twitter accused Takura of promoting child marriages in the video Haarore. While she might have raised a couple of seemingly interesting points, it is important that one gets the facts before they ring the alarm.

The comment made by tanyadiaries is an example that one can find something wrong in anything if they allow themselves to. Self acclaimed feminists often take to the keyboard without first finding out any facts about the issues they write about.

Women stand with Monique

Although the Katlego Maboe case has been concluded, a woman named Rosie Motene on twitter posted “I still believe you”. Women For Change, the organization Katlego is suing for perpetuating the false abuse allegations retweeted the post. This is indication that they still stand their ground regardless of the court ruling.

A bit too far?

The feminist movement has undoubtedly played a positive role towards safe guarding women. Yet their tactics can sometimes come off as harassing and abusive. There are certain areas where the aggression pays off. But there are times where it is not necessary. The issue is not that they are aggressive but that they do not know where to draw the line.
