The covid-19 situation has compromised Mozambique’s efforts to fight the recurring insurgents in the country. Fortunately SADC countries were ready to pitch in and assist the struggling nation. Among these good Samaritans is Zimbabwe.
Reports that have come from Mozambique on these wars are devastating. 3000 have been killed and 800 000 more have been forcibly relocated from their as gas-rich homelands since the beginning of the conflict in 2017.
It is one of these Mozambique insurgents that even lead to the beheading of a Zimbabwean who was residing in Mozambique. The issue caused such a stir in Zimbabwe. It is probably no surprise then that Zimbabwe is very much concerned about what is going on in neighbouring Mozambique.
Ambassador Faranisi, who lead Zimbabwe in yesterday’s SADC meeting said the budget had already been approved. The ambassador shared the following remarks on this subject:
“So from now onwards, we should be in a position to see the SADC standby force being deployed to Mozambique since the council of ministers has approved the budget.”
