Call it feminism, equal rights or whatever but woman have increasingly yearned for the same rights afforded to men. An example would be that of men being allowed to have more than one wife. Algeria, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Egypt, South Africa are among the African countries that recognise these polygamous relationships. Now, South Africa might just be taking it a step further.
The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa published aĀ landmark policy document calling for polyandry to be legally recognised as a form of marriage. Polyandry is a form of polygamy in which the woman can have more than one husband. This move by the Home Affairs department was done in a bid to promote equality.
According to Retief, a member of PolyamorySA, the departmentās proposals are a step closer to the acceptance of non-monogamy in South Africa. She continued that this is a step in the right direction for the nation.
The aforementioned Retief stated she finds it bizarre that society seems to look more favourably to cheating than they do to legal polyamorous relationship.
Perhaps this move will be able to minimise the humiliating cheating scandals such as the one we covered in a previous article here.
