South African billionaire and owner of Sundowns football club Patrice Motsepe has been elected new Confederation of African Football (CAF) President. Motsepe was unopposed in his bid after rivals withdrew from the race.
Motsepe takes over from Ahmad Ahmad, who was handed a five-year ban by FIFA over financial misconduct. The FIFA ethics committee found Ahmad had breached his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President.
Patrice Motsepe becomes the first South African to occupy the post.
Football fans are hoping Motsepe will usher in a prosperous tenure with financial resources and connections he has.
