There was an time when women and girls didn’t have the right to much. Girls couldn’t go to school and women couldn’t work certain jobs.

In recent years we have seen the rise of the feminist movement. A group of women that take it upon themselves to fight injustice towards women and call for equality in all aspects of life.

The rise of the feminist movement played a key role in uplifting girls and women. Now there is very little that women cannot do. This new found confidence has caused some women to harass and be abusive towards men under the guise of activism.

Takura

A couple of weeks ago a woman called tanyadairies on twitter accused Takura of promoting child marriages in the video Haarore. While she might have raised a couple of seemingly interesting points, it is important that one gets the facts before they ring the alarm.

The comment made by tanyadiaries is an example that one can find something wrong in anything if they allow themselves to. Self acclaimed feminists often take to the keyboard without first finding out any facts about the issues they write about.

Women stand with Monique

Although the Katlego Maboe case has been concluded, a woman named Rosie Motene on twitter posted “I still believe you”. Women For Change, the organization Katlego is suing for perpetuating the false abuse allegations retweeted the post. This is indication that they still stand their ground regardless of the court ruling.

A bit too far?

The feminist movement has undoubtedly played a positive role towards safe guarding women. Yet their tactics can sometimes come off as harassing and abusive. There are certain areas where the aggression pays off. But there are times where it is not necessary. The issue is not that they are aggressive but that they do not know where to draw the line.

In the age of feminism so many issues that might not have been issues before have arisen. One problem that recently caused alarm was when a woman was dumped by her husband-to-be for not taking his last name. Okay, lets break this issue down.

A Zimbabwean social media influencer called Tete Fadzi has tailored her brand to focus on addressing issues that are pressing in society. She has previously instigated a discussion on why married women cheat. This time around, a distraught female reached out her asking her to ask her audience what they thought of the situation.

The Situation

The anonymous lady in question felt sad when she came across her ex-boyfriend’s traditional wedding/lobola/roora pictures. They had just split up less than 2 months prior. The cause of the break up was said to be that the girl had refused to take the boyfriend’s last name if they got married in order to preserve “her own sense of identity.”

What’s the big deal?

According to the guy, he took this as sign that the girl’s hunger for independence in this way would be problematic to their marriage. As a result he left her and went on to marry someone who would take on his last name 2 months later.

Here is the longer version of the story as told by the girl:

People’s Perspective

Feminists

As you might imagine, feminists were quick to pounce on the issue congratulating the girl for dodging a major bullet. Many of them suggested that the ex-boyfriend would have been a very controlling husband and cause her even more problems in the future.

Other Men And Women

Others were quick to side with the ex-boyfriend stating that the girl would have been a headache of a wife so in their eyes, it was the guy who had dodged a bullet. They brought up that the moment you decide to get married its now a thing for two and the woman ought to meet her husband half way instead of overly pursuing “independence.”

Has this woman just lost a good man in the name of feminism or she dodged a massive bullet?

Campaigns to educate the girl child have been on the increase in this modern age. They have generally been viewed as a great initiative. However, it seems like the world is not on the same page as to why girls must also be educated.

The statement uttered by an educated woman sparked some controversy in the social media streets. She suggested without shame that a woman is to be educated for the sake of her husband. As you might have guessed, she was bashed left, right, and center.

Before we share what people’s opinions are on such a matter, here’s the life story shared by the lady in question:

So, not only is a degree an asset to the women’s husbands, but according to this lady, university campuses are there to help women find husbands. It was this story that triggered several people. Many didn’t shy away from expressing their disappointment. View some of the comments relating to this matter below:

We wonder if advocates for girl’s education eg Strive Masiyiwa, among others, have had thoughts like this cross their minds in their quest to educate girls. That would certainly change the narrative on these matters.

What are your thoughts?
