The government of Zimbabwe and MSU (Midlands State University) have partnered in a project to translate the Highway code into local languages.

The Highway Code will soon be available in the sixteen official local languages; Chewa, Chibarwe, English, Kalanga, Khoisan, Nambya, Ndau, Ndebele, Shangani, Shona, sign language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda and Xhosa (Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act 2013) The translation process is set to be complete by end of the year.

While this is a great step in the right direction, one has to wonder how non-English speaking Zimbabweans have been managing to take the test in the first place. The Provisional License test has been said to be difficult even for those who speak and understand English with many people having to take it twice or thrice before actually passing it.

If not knowing how to read and write in English was a true barrier then surely all people who cannot write and read in English would not have Zimbabwean driver’s licenses. How have we managed to survive this long as a country without vernacular options to the Highway Code which is a key element to understanding basic road rules?

Moving on… The licensing system will also be extended to a pictorial format to cater for the illiterate. Are we saying that all illiterate people in Zimbabwe have until now been failing to get driver’s licenses? Contrary to popular belief, many people in Zimbabwe can not speak and read English. And quite a number are also illiterate. Yet there are many people in society that cannot speak English but drive…

Midlands State University (MSU) which is currently conducting courses through elearning following a series of Covid-19 cases on campus is known for drama. The MSU girls have a very interesting history among society. On a somewhat unrelated note, Gospel singer Mudiwa Hood has decided to show two specific MSU girls some kindness.

You might be wondering what inspired him to extend his kindness in that direction. It turns out that when he previously visited the university, two girls were in so much awe of his Louboutons that they reached out to touch them when he stood within their reach. That really touched him that he decided to buy the two girls a pair of sneakers each.

He shared the images on his social media:

This is not the first time Mudiwa Hood is carrying out an act of kindness. He is known for sometimes giving people on social media and even on the streets money or clothing items. Surprisingly, his acts of kindness have been taken with a pinch of salt by some who assumed he had ulterior motives.

Covid-19 cases have escalated making it difficult to carry out any face to face interactions. Such is the case at Midlands State University’s Zvishavane Campus.

The University was forced to suspend face to face lectures after 54 individuals tested positive for Covid-19. These individuals are mainly students at the University.

Acting Midlands provincial medical director, Dr Reginald Mhene confirmed these cases. He further stated that tests and contact tracing is still ongoing. However, to curb the spread of the virus, the university will only hold online lectures. The suspension of face to face lectures was applied with immediate effect starting on 30 June 2021. These changes apply to both the Zvishavane Campus and the main Gweru Campus.

This developments comes at a time when the government has also announced a new set of Level 4 lockdown restrictions. The restrictions were also applied with immediate effect starting on 30 June 2021.

We hear it all the time, that its never too late to start chasing our dreams. This time around Sandra Ndebele has proved this statement to be true by enrolling at the Midlands State University for a degree program related to the music industry.

It seems the only thing that was holding Sandra Ndebele back from pursuing this dream earlier was her lack of A-Levels. She finally passed her A-Levels in 2020 and then went on to apply for university. She will be studying is towards a degree in Bachelor of Social Sciences Music Business, Musicology and Technology degree.

Sandra Ndebele’s student card

Sandra Ndebele is currently 39 years of age (born 1982) and is the mother of three. However, she did not allow herself to be overly consumed by these factors and stop chasing her dreams.

She also did not allow her accomplishments to lead her to forget her dream. Some of these accomplishments include being nominated in the 2003 ZIMA awards in three categories following her release of her solo album “Tshaya Tshaya”. She was nominated in the same category as Alick Macheso and the late Oliver Mtukudzi for Best Live Act (2003). She was also nominated in the Most Promising Artiste, Best Female and Best Urban Grooves(Female) Award categories.

So although she seems like she has already “made-it” she hasn’t let other people’s measure of her success stop her from further improving herself. For that we say well done Sandra well done.
