Another robbery took place at a Mukuru Branch and the armed robbers got away with US$10 000+. As it is the second robbery of its kind at Mukuru, this begs the question, is this a matter of bad security systems or insider information?

Crime in Zimbabwe is becoming more violent and daring but not as violent as South Africa and other developed countries. So, why is it that large companies are an easy target for ordinary robbers?

Mukuru Branch Robbery

Two unidentified armed robbers pounced on the Mukuru Branch at Rutenga Growth Point located inside the N&R Wholesalers which is at the growth point. The armed robbers fires two warning shots and thereafter escorted a Mukuru employee, Mr Mugwagwa to the safe at gunpoint.

They took US$10 000  and R110 from the safe along with two Mukuru Samsung Phones Valued at $40 000. They proceeded to raid one of the tills in N&R Wholesalers. In the till they are said to have taken US$1795 and over $21 460 bond.

The robbers are said to have sped off in a Toyota Probox vehicle with no license plates.

Police say that investigations on this case are still underway.

A Sign Of Poor Security Systems?

It is cases like these that show the need for advanced security systems. Perhaps, the bigger indictment is to Mukuru itself. One would have thought that after experiencing a similar robbery in March where the armed robbers escaped with USD17 000, more robust systems would have been implemented. Therefore, for an organisation whose core business function is to offer financial services, the security is expected to be top notch and not very easily penetrated by ordinary robbers.

Perhaps the booth model used makes it difficult to implement the necessary security systems. Or, the company could be reliant on the security provided by the spaces that house them. However, as a remittance company obviously be working with a security company.

The problem is that even the security companies do not inspire confidence. In an unfortunate incident recently, the security company, Fawcett was penetrated at their headquarters by what are said to have been ordinary robbers. These are the organisations expected to provide top notch security systems.

Perhaps engaging the police would be a better option right? Well, I wouldn’t really look there either. We have previously covered the case of a 14 year old boy who managed to penetrate and rob a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) station. Yes, you read that right!

These trends pose a serious question to those that have trusted Mukuru with their money. Exactly how safe are we when we go to collect our monies. Its high time Mukuru increased their security  or found safer ways to get money to recipients. Lest, we get shot when collecting our monies.

On a lighter note, four armed robbers are said to have broken into a house in successfully escaped with US$1.
