A lot of prices have been adjusted in Zimbabwe in recent weeks and the Russia-Ukraine war has been mentioned as a major reason. From fuel price hikes to mealie meal and most recently bread prices went up by 100%.

Many people have been bushing the war off as a lame excuse and wondering what the connection between Zimbabwe, Russia and Ukraine could be. After all the countries are thousands of kilometres away from Zimbabwe and separated by seas. That was until Tafadzwa Musarara the chairman of the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe disclosed an interesting fact.

The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe imports wheat for the country and Russia and Ukraine are on the supplier’s list. Apparently, there is a consignment of Zimbabwe’s wheat that has been stuck in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol for weeks now and Musarara has expressed that the association is considering sourcing the wheat from other countries.

Musarara said that Australia is facing floods that are affecting their agriculture and they are considering sourcing wheat from Canada. One might wonder why Zimbabwe is importing wheat in the first place. Firstly wheat is apparently not a profitable crop for farmers in Zimbabwe. According to a critical review of the wheat industry in Zimbabwe by J Mutambara, A P Zvinavashe & E Mwakiwa, the average gross margin per hectare is negative, about – $461.00 and profits are about -$623.81 per hectare.

Zimbabwe imports wheat for two main reasons; to cover the deficit arriving from local wheat production so that we meet the 400 000 tonne national requirement and to enhance the quality of bread flour. After maize, wheat is the second most important food crop grown in Zimbabwe.

The above explanation gives one a clearer understanding as to why bread has gone up the way it has in Zimbabwe. But what is the solution? Why is Zimbabwe sourcing wheat so far? Are there no closer African countries that can supply the grain? We will reserve the last two questions for another day.

A solution may be found in the insights made by Andrew Matibiri the CEO of Zimbabwe Agricultural Society, a group responsible for promoting agricultural development in the country. Matibiri said the wheat shortages currently faced in Zimbabwe can serve as an opportunity for local farmers to produce more. In his words;

“This is an opportune time for our farmers to produce more, for the government and the private sector to work together, hand in hand, to support farmers who want to go into wheat production,

And thank God! We have been having some late rainfalls, which have been helping land preparations. So, all in all, the future of wheat production in this country is good.”

Matibiri expressed confidence in local farmers being able to produce sufficient amounts of wheat and possibly even export to other countries that may also be experiencing problems sourcing the grain. This would definitely ease the pressure on many Zimbabweans whose costs of living are being challenged daily by price hikes.

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has officially announced that fuel prices have been increased just four days after a previous increase.

This comes as a shock to many as one would not expect a price hike, especially in US dollars. Yet ZERA has announced that the new fuel prices are now $1.68 for Diesel and $1.67 for the blend. In local currency, a litre of diesel is now Z$218.01 and petrol Z$216.78 up from Z$195.99 and Z$195.72 respectively.

ZERA mentioned the increase of oil prices on the international market due to the ripple effects of the war against Ukraine by Russia. International oil prices have jumped significantly over the past week as global sanctions cripple Russia’s ability to export crude oil following its invasion of Ukraine.

The general fear is that these fuel prices increases might get out of hand and we will soon find ourselves paying over 2 US dollars per litre soon. This will also affect the cost of other things like food, transport costs etc. ZUPCO recently increased their ticket prices and this change by ZERA may cause another ticket increase.

A Zimbabwean woman took to Instagram to ask for help as the Russian army invades Ukraine.

News reports say that explosions have been heard in Ukraine and pictures of army tanks and hurt civilians have been posted as well.  In her post, the Zimbabwean woman (named mellisa_charuvira on Instagram) said that some other Zimbabweans with her had been hurt. Mellisa also said she is a student in Ukraine and she pleaded for fellow Zimbabweans and the government to find a means to intervene and help them flee the country.

It is unknown how Mellisa and the fellow Zimbabweans with her failed to leave Ukraine amid warnings. A few weeks ago more than a dozen nations urged their citizens to leave Ukraine due to warnings from western powers of an imminent invasion. If Mellisa and other Zimbabwean students did not have the means to leave, that would have been the time to reach out for help.

Reports say Putin has warned other countries that any attempt to interfere would lead to “consequences they have never seen”. Russia’s military said it had targeted Ukrainian air bases and other military assets. Explosions were heard in the capital, Kyiv, as well as Odesa and Kharkiv. We hope Mellisa and fellow Zimbabweans make it home safe.

It is noted that the Covid-19 pandemic has posed the biggest challenge second from the Second World War(WW2). As a resulted, it has necessitated the need for serious preparations in view of any future pandemics. 23 world leaders lead by The German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wrote to this effect proposing a global pandemic treaty.

The leaders stated that this pandemic is a clear sign that “nobody is safe until everyone is safe”. In addition, they spoke of the probability of another pandemic saying that it is not a question “if” another pandemic might happen but “when” it will happen.

In addition to those sentiments, it was also added that a single country can not effectively deal with the threat is such a pandemic alone. Hence, it is deemed necessary that countries work together in fighting such threats.

The 23 world leaders who are part of this global treaty proposal argue that such a treat as was formed in the wake of WW2 is needed to allow cross-boarder cooperation.

The signatories, who include the head of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, equated these times with WW2 times and vouched for a Covid-19 International treaty because: “At that time(WW2), following the devastation of two world wars, political leaders came together to forge the multilateral system.

The leaders said that similarly, countries must now “be better prepared to predict, prevent, detect, assess and effectively respond to pandemics in a highly coordinated fashion”.

The treaty is proposed to serve the purpose of establishing rigid systems that alert people of pandemics before they occur. In addition it would also facilitate an improved data sharing and vaccine and protective equipment distribution system.

The aforementioned leaders went on to say “At a time when Covid-19 has exploited our weaknesses and divisions, we must seize this opportunity and come together as a global community for peaceful co-operation that extends beyond this crisis.

If this proposal is supported by other major countries, that treaty can take several years to negotiate then ratify. Will it be ready before the next big pandemic?

Thus far the following countries have shown their support for this global treaty:

  • Fiji
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Britain
  • Rwanda
  • Kenya
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Korea
  • Chile
  • Costa Rica
  • Albania
  • South Africa
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Netherlands
  • Tunisia
  • Senegal
  • Spain
  • Norway
  • Serbia
  • Indonesia
  • Ukraine
  • WHO

What are your thoughts on such a treaty?
