They get a hand, now they want the whole arm. It seems Zimbabwean Chiefs were not satisfied with the fleet of cars that they have were given, they now want to be referred to as Kings.
Zimbabwean chiefs, lead by the chief who was instrumental in the exhumation and reburial of former President R.G Mugabe, Chief Zvimba have confronted the government over a serious matter. Instead of just being referred to as Chiefs they see the title “King” as more fitting for them. But is it though?
Why King Instead of Chief?
Stanley Urayayi Mhondoro aka Chief Zvimba spoke to the Zimbabwe National Army Chief at the anual Chiefs and Army Generals luncheon, to relay this urgent matter to the President. He explained that the title “Chief” gives people the wrong perspective of them and is likely to lead to their being equated with Chief Executives and Chief Engineers of companies.
Chief Zvimba highlighted that they were royalty just like Queen Elizabeth and King George who are never referred to as Chiefs. He argued that Chief does not befit the lofty status they carry.
Role and Nature of Chiefs in Zimbabwe Justifies Using “King” Title?
The chiefs in Zimbabwe are responsible for handling disputes withing their small sphere’s of influence. They are meant to uphold and promote cultural values while facilitating development. Their role is monitored and regulated within set parameters of the Zimbabwean Constitution. The President has more authority than these traditional leaders.
In our Shona language these leaders are referred to as “Mambo”. It is not uncommon that when a Sabhuku, who heads a smaller village community, fails to resolve a situation it is taken “kwaMambo.” or as they have been called in English “Chiefs” This term “mambo” translates directly to King. The Shona’s have long since used that terminology and “Chief” came along during colonial eras.
Just like the Western Kings, the position of Chief is also attained through lineage.
The role of chiefs is deemed important in the resolving of issues such as in the case of President Mnangagwa’s plans to finally compensate the Gukurahundi victims. Because of these collaborative efforts between chiefs and the President, Gukurahundi victims might just finally get some peace and closure.
Given this oversight, do you think the Chiefs’ role justifies the use of the lofty term King?
