In May, a Zimbabwean journalist working for the New York Times was arrested. The journalist, Jeffrey Moyo, had been charged for improperly helping 2 New York Times journalists make a reporting trip to the country.
Moyo’s freedom does not appear real as he is expected to hand over his passport, pay 5000 bond note bail among other restrictions. One of the journalist’s lawyers’ David Coltart mentioned that the restrictions are to remain as the case against Moyo is still pending.
The two reporters that were brought in by Moyo were Christina Goldbaum and João Silva. This act lead to his charge of violating immigration rules by committing fraud to facilitate the entry of the reporter. The two journalists were then kicked out of the country by the authorities saying that they had not gone through the right channels.
Moyo was previously denied bail last month as the judge said that he posed a national threat.
He was finally released after a government lawyer wrote in a court application that the state did not have a strong case against Moyo and that it did not oppose an appeal by his lawyers to have him released on bail.
