The current state of the Zimbabwean economy is no secret. From an almost inexplicable 1:1 bond note to USD exchange rate to 200:1 +, this is just one of the tell tale signs of an unstable economy. A couple of moves have been made by the government and looking back, its now adding up.

Now you are probably thinking of all those times Zimbabwe’s economy analysts and other reputable sources stated that Zimbabwean was headed towards greener pastures. Eddie Cross issued a statement going in depth on how the economy of Zimbabwe was positioned in a way that it was finally set for stability. The International Monetary Fund  (IMF) seemed to back up those statements stating that Zimbabwe’s economy was set to grow more than they had previously reported. All this was said just last year.

On the contrary, other reputable media sources (Bloomberg among others) shared detailed articles of the Zimbabwean economy stating that it was on the verge of collapsing.

So what’s the real deal?

Well, lets take a look on the ground.

Some of the steps taken by government to date

The government has announced various measures from the time the statements on the economy being headed in the right direction were made to date. Now, looking carefully at how far we have come, the economy seems further from the “stability” that has been spoken about.

Here are some of the events that have taken place thus far that we will soon dissect to get a clear position on where we are as a country.

• Mthuli Ncube announces 50% duty on car imports is payable in Zim dollars.
• Announcement of $50 withdrawal at bank rate for Zimbabweans
• $50 withdrawal for general public halted

A sign of a crumbling economy?

The aforementioned are just but a few measures taken by the government between 2021 and 2022. However, why did retractions or alterations have to be made on previously established policies? While changes are allowed, in our case this could be the tell tale sign of a plummeting economy.

Why?

For starters, before the announcement on duties on car import being payable in Zim dollars consider the prevailing situation. ZIMRA was experiences a huge decline in revenue coming in from vehicle imports due to high duty fees. So…no/not as much money as before. A change had to be made, right? If at least half the duty fees is payable in Zim dollar that seems incentive enough for more car imports to take place and more (seemingly much needed) money flows in.

How about the $50 withdrawal at bank rate which has now been reserved for pensioners, senior citizens and vulnerable members of society? Is it possible that in addition to the government trying to limit the people profiting from the arrangement, there also just could be less money available to continue providing the $50 withdrawal limit to the public? Could that be the same reasoning that might have lead to the further limits on mobile money transactions?

The Zim dollar continues to deplete against the USD. However, reports from local based media continue to point to a growing Zimbabwean economy so we might not get to the point where our currency is exhibited in British museums again, right?

New RBZ Measure 

RBZ Governor Dr John Mangudya in the latest Monetary Policy Statement announced an increase in transaction limits on mobile banking.

The increases are as follows:

• Person to Business : ZW$20 000 to ZW$25 000 per transaction with a maximum limit of ZW$100 000 per week
• Person to Person    : ZW$5 000 to ZW$10 000 per transaction with a limit of ZW$70 000 per week

In addition to transaction limits, the RBZ also announced cash withdrawal limits for the banking public which is from ZW$2000 to ZW$5000 per week.

We get why this might be done…but

From past similar decisions, we can deduce that transaction limits are put in place to combat the current black market money activities which have a detrimental effect on the economy when left ungoverned. However, the measures can prove to be a disadvantage for the ordinary person who is paid electronically and might no longer be able to buy essential all at once.

The limits on mobile money proved to be a challenge in the case of the Zimbabwean hero who jumped into a fire to save strangers. The public was moved to cover the hospital bills, however, many weren’t able to continue contributing as the recipients ecocash had reached its weekly limit.

While that isn’t too much of a surprise, a question that keeps coming up over and over again when these hikes take place is, “why is POTRAZ allowing such ridiculousness to happen?”

POTRAZ

For those who don’t know, POTRAZ is an acronym for Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe. This is the board that regulates data prices in Zimbabwe. They are responsible for making sure that the data tariffs set by these mobile network operators are reasonable and justified.

So the question still stands…where is POTRAZ amidst all these data tariffs hikes?

Zimbabwe has reported the highest data tariff prices in our region despite the existence of boards such as POTRAZ. As a result, some Zimbabweans on various social platforms have finally reached a conclusion on this matter and it might just make sense. They have suggested that these unbearable price hikes could possibly be a way of reducing people’s access to the internet because a lot of political awareness and change start as just conversations on the internet.

Remember that November when a revolution started and was organised from the internet? A whole regime was changed and that is the power of the internet.

So it would make sense a lot of sense if this was a way to stop that from happening. With regards to this situation, a social media user (@doctorphill1) commented:

“social media has been and is our weapon as Citizens to spread information pertaining voting for competent leadership.”

These were the same sentiments shared by citizens when the 2022 national budget revealed controversial tax amounts on mobile phone purchases.

But ironically, those with more problems to worry about seem ready to help someone else.

Real Life Situation That Made A Grown Man Cry

You’re probably wondering what this rant is all about and at which part am I going to prove to you that you might never be as kind as a mere street kid.

A Harare man took to his Facebook to share an experience that made him emotional and got him thinking twice about the kind of person his own son would grow up to be..

Imagine all those times you hold on so tightly to the little money you have to take you through to the next pay day. I’ll admit that if I’ll struggle to give away something when I’ve got just a few of it left. It almost never crosses many people’s minds that although you might be in a bad place, someone has it worse and could even need that money you have more than you do. Would you be willing to let it go?

What Went Wrong?

Now, I don’t have the answer to this one, but I’m also wondering how we got here. Why do people who seem to be better off seem to struggle to show a little kindness? I’ve heard something along the lines of “I worked very hard to get here.” At that point, the disregard for other individuals kicks in.

Is it because of the way our society is? Once we start earning, we want more and more that we don’t stop to reflect on the person we’re becoming. Is that it?

Lady Cheetahs

If you are not aware, the Lady Cheetah’s are Zimbabwe’s very own female rugby team.The team is currently ranked fourth in Africa and competes in the regional tournaments and also international tournaments organized by Rugby Africa and World Rugby.

The girls put on a great performance at the recent 2022 Africa Cup pre-qualifiers tournament which were held in Maseru, Lesotho.

Africa Cup Pre-qualifiers Performance

The Lady Cheetahs gave their all at this tournament in Lesotho and left undefeated with 160 points all in all. They were part of the 5 teams competing to make the Africa Cup and managed to be the only team that didn’t face defeat in any of their matches.

The teams they played and respective scorelines were as follows:

Lesotho 62 – 0

Namibia 39 – 0

Mauritus 20 – 0

The team managed to qualify for the Africa Cup with a game to spare…Well Done Girls!

If the team maintains this performance at the Africa Cup, we’ll be seeing them at the Sevens Rugby World Cup next year. The World Cup will take place on South African soil for the first time.

This is not the first team to fly the flag high internationally this year. Whilst the nation was healing from the AFCON Warriors disappointment, the Zimbabwean female hockey team was also representing the nation, playing on our 1980s Golden Girls level.

I’m sure some people would have started to celebrate the progress or at least be hopeful that this means their own roads were next in line. Unfortunately, bubbles were burst when other twitter users immediately remembered coming across that same image on the internet.

The image is said to be of a road constructed by the government of South Sudan that was later stopped due to non-payment from the government.

Are We Being Taken For Fools?

We wonder what the motive behind Nick Mangwana’s using of images that are not even from the country to depict work that is supposedly taking place in Zimbabwe was. However, many have already concluded that this just shows the malintent and lies by the government and its representatives.

This gave rise to another issue. The buses. People are now wondering if that’s just another item on the list of “things that didn’t happen.”Are they just another set of downloaded images or are we being shown the same image over and over again?

Before we even get that far, is there even any work being done on the Zimbabwean roads seeing that we need images from other countries to depict the work being done?

War With Susan Mutami

The businesswoman Susan Mutami is Temba Mliswa’s baby mama and potential political rival. All along we knew her as Mai matwins as she is said to have mothered Mliswa’s twins. However, Mliswa doesn’t seem so sure of that “fact.” He even produced the birth certificates to put across his point that there might not be twins after all.

So Temba Mliswa has just suggested doing DNA tests…ermmm…where was he when Provoker Magazine suggested these DNA tests long back during the Jah Prayzah scandal which was spiked by Mliswa?

Need a closer look at the “twins” birth certifications?

The funny thing is, how is Temba Mliswa only realising that he received the same birth certificate twice under the “pretence” that there were twins?

Many are suggesting that he is only bringing this up because he has been triggered by the picture Susan shared wearing yellow on #yellowfriday in support of Chamisa’s CCC. Could that be the real issue?

The yellow could be the issue because this is not the first time the media has reported on Susan Mutami’s “non-existent” twins. On December 29 2021, Susan Mutami is said to have revealed that she in fact had just one child with Temba, according to Zim Eye. She is also said to have suggested that the kid was in fact S B Moyo’s and not Mliswa’s in the following affidavit:

Whether or not the allegations are true is another story…BUT the question is why didn’t Temba Mliswa bring this twins and DNA issue up at that time and follow up with the necessary investigations… at that time?
