If you are used to having an excess of maize after harvest your next move would probably be to sell the remainder. This time around you might not be able to that due to a stern warning by the Grain Marketing Board (GMB).
The GMB marketing executive Rokie Mutenha stated in the warning that farmers must not engage in side marketing of targeted produce. He said it is the role of GMB and registered contractors alone to sell maize. Anyone else who is caught doing so should expect a hefty fine or imprisonment of up to 2 years.
The GMB and law enforcement teams have already strategizing how they will be catching and dealing with people caught on the wrong side of this law.
In a bid to enforce this law, transportation of large quantities of maize are now prohibited. So in essence, if you have a farm far from your place of residence and wish to transport the maize from the farm to your home, you might just get in some serious trouble. The law stipulates that an individual is allowed to transport a maximum of 5 bag of maize and three bags of soya beans.
Those that wish to transport larger quantities will be expected to have a valid movement permit issued by the GMB.
