The Gukurahundi period caused a huge divide which still exists today in Zimbabwe.

Since the late 1987s, Zimbabweans in Matebeleland have grieved the injustices of the Gukurahundi massacres. Many Ndebele people were massacred during this period starting in 1983. Fast forward to 2021, the Gukurahundi issue was not addressed and neither were victims compensated. The attitude regards to this issue has lead to Zimbabweans feeling like Matebeleland people are already sabotaging the 2023 elections.

This is about to change as the President met with members of the National Council of Chiefs on the 21 August 2021 . The aim was to receive recommendations to resolve the issues related to Gukurahundi. It has been resolved that each Chief will spear head the resolution of the issue in his or her area of jurisdiction.

President Mnangagwa has engaged the various chiefs as he believes the one size fits all approach will not work. The chiefs will be assigned the task of dealing with the problems raised by their respective communities. As soon as any chief is ready, the president will deploy the needed resources for that area.

Key issues that have so far been raised include include identity documentation such as birth, national IDs and deaths certificates, underdevelopment and marginalisation of Matabeleland region, national healing and reconciliation as well as national building, counselling and psychological support, consultation of victims, exhumations, burials and memorials, reparations and compensation and social social security benefits.

Other compensatory measures being taken by the President include the compensation of white farmers for the land they lost.

The nation already had eyes on President Mnangagwa when he failed to deliver a congratulatory message to Hakaime Hichilema in good time. Although the congratulatory message finally surfaced, Mnangagwa has now expressed his true feelings towards Zambia’s president.

In an unexpected yet much-anticipated turn of events, Zambia’s opposition won the elections despite the efforts to rig that had been made. This news excited the world, particularly Zimbabweans who are now hopeful for the upcoming 2023 elections. Ideas were shared by Zimbabweans throughout social media on how they can defend their vote this coming election.

The Zanu-PF party made a point to indicate that their party shares many similarities to Hakainde Hichilema. However, President Mnangagwa was later recorded basically telling Zimbabweans that they should fear if what happened in Zambia happens here. This is despite the sentiments relating to this issue that some officials shared.

The historical win in the elections by Zambia’s Hakainde Hichilema has stirred some serious conversations in the Zimbabwean political space, with those in opposition seeing the victory as a harbinger for the 2023 Zimbabwean elections.

The ruling Zanu PF party on the other hand is now also claiming Hakainde Hichilema, in a post on one of their Facebook page named EDhasmyhope the ruling party says Hakainde Hichilema’s UPND party is similar to Zanu PF, than the outgoing Patriotic Front, the irony!

Below is their full statement;

HH contested Presidential Election 6 times and Wamba Brigade is not aware of that
What Wamba Brigade, dont know is that historically and ideologically speaking, Lungu’s party is the real MDC of Zambia although both Lungu’s party and Hichilema’s UPND are splinter parties of Chiluba’s MMD, Hichilema’s party has the closest links with Kaunda’s UNIP as a lot of leaders who served under Kaunda joined hands with Hichilema’s party.
In 2006 for example, UNIP and other opposition parties fielded Hichilema as their presidential candidate. So UPND, the party of Hichilema, is the one that can be said to share historical and ideological similarities with Zanu PF.
However the major observation with Zambian politics if compared to politics in the rest of SADC, is that it is the only country alongside Malawi that have seen their founding independent ruling parties being dislodged from power several times. Kaunda first lost it to the party of Lungu, then led by Chiluba. At one time, albeit inside a coalition UNIP won back the power and lost it again when Lungu came to power. However the disappearance of UNIP from the Zambian political turf today can be attributed to the personalisation of leadership of the UNIP presidency to the Kaundas as KK’s son stuck to the helm of that party among many other reasons.
As for the second republic in Zimbabwe, those in the know are aware how Lungu tried to entertain the idea of militarily coming to the rescue of RG following the November 2017 transition in Zimbabwe. However he later abandoned the idea after noticing that the caucus for liberation war parties of Southern Africa were fully behind the coup that was not a coup depending on one’s persuasion.
In my view, in so far as the Zambian threat is concerned, the second republic in Zimbabwe will welcome the victory of Hichilema.

After previously stating that Zimbabwe will not need the West and could develop amidst sanctions, President Mnangagwa is now en route to fix things with the UK.

Exiled businessman, Paul Westwood took to his social media to share his hopes on the impending visit to the UK by Mnangagwa. Paul Westwood is said to have suffered the injustices from the Zimbabwean government. He claimed that Hon Temba Mliswa declared ownership of his million pound business investment in 2009 and he never received compensation. Such injustices soured relations between Zimbabwe and the west.

Measures are being to taken to mend those damages. Some of these measures include compensation to white farmers. As you can imagine, black Zimbabweans have frowned upon this measure.

Paul Westwood expressed that he hopes this visit to the UK will result in talks to settle the losses he and others faced.

Amidst the heavy economic burdens faced by the children of Zimbabwe, they always someone in politics to blame. The President of Zimbabwe is among those who has been pointed fingers to for the failing of the economy. According to a well-respected foreigner, Mnangagwa is even said to even use prophet’s like Java to advance his political agendas.  No wonder the recent Roki and the rumba artist Koffi Olomide song caused quite a huge stir.

Given the mentality people have towards issues of governance, the song’s praise for ED Mnangagwa was deemed a mockery to Zimbabweans. This is because of the vast amount of starving and struggling Zimbabweans blame the president for these conditions.

Political activists like the controversial Hopewell Chin’ono and Fadzayi Mahere were quick to express their sentiments on his song. They suggested that this could very well be the most expensive rubbish that was produced. Some of the issues raise were that the song is said to be insensitive to the feelings of the people of Zimbabwe.

Mwonzora just a Zanu PF puppet? https://provoker.co.zw/mwonzora-just-a-zanu-pf-puppet/ Thu, 25 Mar 2021 08:20:25 +0000 https://provoker.co.zw/?p=1240 Hon Douglas Mwonzora, who was once termed the “Legitimate President of the Movement for Democratic Change” (MDC-T)by Professor Lovemore Madhuku, was this week rumoured to have joined POLAD. Hon Douglas Mwonzora, who was once termed the “Legitimate President of the Movement for Democratic Change” (MDC-T)by Professor Lovemore Madhuku, was this week rumoured to have joined POLAD. POLAD, a dialogue platform created by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was in July 2018, rejected by MDC saying that it was not a true dialogue platform.

The claim of POLAD not being a true dialogue platform seemed to be confirmed when in January of 2019, the government went ahead to gazette a controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill, which had not taken into consideration POLAD member’s proposals regarding constitutional changes.

If the allegation of joining POLAD is true, it begs the question, why then would a leader of an opposition party choose to be a part of such a dialogue platform after some resistance?

Well, in the vote of thanks speech Hon Douglas Mwonzora gave during the launch of the second vaccination program in Victoria Falls, stated that “politics of divisive vancour are a thing of the past” He suggested that the political outlook had changed from “political self-aggrandisement” to putting the nation first. He continued to share the following sentiments:

“We don’t want politics of hunger, hate and intolerance. As leaders of the opposition we should work for the betterment of the economy to save our people and also support the vaccination programme.”

Watch a snippet of the Honorable’s speech below:

Mwonzora’s move has been viewed as affirmation of suspicions that the MDC-T has been fraternising with the ruling party in and attempt to wipe out the main opposition party led by Nelson Chamisa.

Some have pointed to that this move could be the same strategy of political survival described by the late President Robert Mugabe as the “Madhuku Strategy.” The only difference in this case would be that instead of the opposition causing havoc in the ruling party as was described by the late ex-President, it is viewed as the ruling party’s attempt at disarming the opposition Party since the 2023 elections are fast approaching.

Watch as the Late President describes the “Madhuku Strategy” below:

Fadzayi Mahere, spokesperson for MDC-A led by Nelson Chamisa had the following sentiments to share regarding this move:

“We will take all necessary steps to stop the attempt by Zanu PF and its surrogates who usurped the will of the people to create a one-party State. The regime must respect the democratic and constitutional rights of the citizens to challenge its policies and offer alternatives for the betterment of the nation,”

However, amidst claims that Mwonzora is being used as a puppet by the ruling party and has joined POLAD, he shared the following sentiment:

“It’s a national event where people unite to fight the pandemic. We have nothing to do with Polad. This is not a Polad event”

What are your thoughts on these opinions?

Zimbabwean Journalist Oscar Pambuka has written an Open Letter to the President of Zimbabwe, ED Mnangagwa urging him to look into the plight of the youths, you can read the full letter below:

Greetings to you Your Excellency Cde ED. Well this is my first letter to you my dear President of the Republic of Zimbabwe. I hope I find you well.
Allow me to highlight a very pertinent issue which needs your urgent attention Your Excellency.

The issue is about us youths born after independence. I feel we have been left out in the political and especially economic discourse.

Visit any ghetto right now as an example, you will see a generation not working, farming, mining, trading or constructing anything. Its not because we are incapable Your Excellency but no opportunities are being availed to this important and strategic group.

Whilst the older generation has farms, multiple mines and businesses, houses, cars etc, our group remains stagnant and only own the clothes we wear and nothing else.

What is your plan Your Excellency with this strategic generation? Are you happy to see this generation abuse drugs, alcohol and so on or you have a concrete plan to support us.

We don’t own any collateral other than our intellectual property.
Please please please as a matter of urgency, let’s immediately address this anomaly.

I am 34 years old right now and together with my generational peers, we are in a desperate situation. Tibatsireiwo Mukuru tivakewo dzimba dzedu kwete kugara mu one room kusvika ndava 60.
I know you listen Your Excellency.
No retreat No Surrender

The Cabinet of of Zimbabwe has approved the proposal by the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement to review the producer prices for maize, small grains, wheat, soya beans and cotton.

Maize and other small grains are now priced at RTGS$726 per metric tonne, that is almost double the price that was paid last season which stood at $390 per tonne.

Cotton is now priced at a whopping RTGS$1950 per metric tonne, wheat RTGS$1089.69 per tonne and soya bean is now pegged at RTGS$918 per tonne.

In a bid to avoid prices increases the government has also maintained the 39.5% subsidy on the selling price to millers.

Now the question is how will the markets react to this increase, the government is hoping that this move will result in increased agricultural production, and hence boost national food security.
