The post Huge blow for Chamisa as new party name is contested appeared first on Provoker Magazine.
]]>Following Morgan Tsvangirai’s passing, MDC split into several MDCs. Some have suggested that some of the MDC factions were created as a move to confuse voters and spread out the votes to reduce the chances of Chamisa gaining many votes. This is the approach commonly known as divide and concur.
Whether or not the above claims are true is not certain, however, Nelson Chamisa had decided to change his party’s name. Voters would be less confused as to which MDC they were voting for. However, that move has hit a huge obstacle. The name Citizens Convergence for Change ( CCC) seems to have been taken all along.

While this information is being verified further its no surprise that Chamisa supporters are very sceptical of this information. The general sentiment on this from Chamisa supporters was, “mazopererwa manje” which suggests that they think this is the doing of ruling party, Zanu PF.
Perhaps Chamisa will focus on trying to get the youths together as he has been encouraging. This comes after the youths in Zambia are said to have been instrumental in Hakainde Hichilema’s victory.

]]>Elias Mudzuri, the VP of MDC-T is reported to have caused the death of Ronald Mukumbira. Mukumbira is said to have been at Duriro Pub & Grill in Workington, Harare. He is said to have been attacked following a dispute over missing pool table balls. The bar is owned by VP Mudzuri.
The said assault victim reportedly told his mother and brother that he was attacked by Elias Mudzuri and his brother Leonard Mudzuri, among other unnamed men. He died on June 10 2021, three days after the assault is said to have taken place.
Relatives of the deceased are said to have taken the coffin with the body to Mudzuri’s home. Apparently, the family is furious that the police haven’t arrested Mudzuri, however a post-mortem carried out seems to not link the death with the assault. Nonetheless, the victim’s mother insists that the pathologist had written that the issue needed to be investigated.
Mukumbira’s death is reportedly still under investigation. However, the late’s family is worried that the police will not arrest the alleged perpetrators given their political status.
This is not the first time that a member of the MDC-T party has made headlines. This year alone several others have given rise to speculation as they switched to Zanu PF.

]]>The MDC duo is Last Maengahama and Tunga Madzorera. They were sentenced on May 10, 2016. This followed after a police officer, Petros Mutedza was murdered in Glen View following a fight that had broke out between residents. They were among the 23 other Glen View residents arrested for this crime.
The prominent lawyer and politician, Fadzayi Mahere had recently visited the duo. She expressed their lament over being convicted for a crime they were not involved in. The duo, both fathers, worried often about their children’s welfare while at Chikurubi but sadly, could not do anything about it.

During the 45 plus days in Chikurubi prison, Joanna Mamombe had to be rushed to the hospital. We discussed this issue in a previous article you can read here.

]]>The president will be able to do the following as a result of the passing of this bill:
MDC conglomerates including Thokozani Khupe, Nomvula Mguni, Phelela Masuku, Livingstone Chimina, Patrick Dube, Joel Gabuza, Innocent Gonese, Shapespear Hamauswa, Norman Allan Markham, Phelela Masuku, Daniel Molokela, Edwin Mushoriwa, Stella Ndlovu, Jacob Nyokanhete, Tose Wesley Sansole, Trevor Saruwaka, Job Sikhala, Godfrey Sithole, Jane Nicola Watson, Jasmine Toffa, Illos Nyoni, and David Tekeshe have rejected this amendment. The general sentiment is that these changes are all centered around consolidating President Mnangagwa’s powers.
An appalled Tendai Biti shared the following sentiments with regards to this bill:
“We will fight this abomination. Emmerson’s disrespect of the constitution and total violation of decency and the rule of law sets him apart as the greatest existential threat to the Zimbabwe State. In three years, Zimbabwe has descended into a little outpost of fascism and state failure, thanks to politics of greed, violence, and idiocy.”
MDC-T Senator and Thokozani Khupe ally, Khaliphani Phugeni, posed a question with regards to the appointment of judges:
“What’s wrong about a judge who is going to preside over our matters to be publicly interviewed for all to be convinced that indeed this person is fit to hold the position that they seek?

Finally, an interview with Obert Gutu reveals the reasons why opposition members would turn to Zanu PF. Watch the video below:

]]>The claim of POLAD not being a true dialogue platform seemed to be confirmed when in January of 2019, the government went ahead to gazette a controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill, which had not taken into consideration POLAD member’s proposals regarding constitutional changes.
If the allegation of joining POLAD is true, it begs the question, why then would a leader of an opposition party choose to be a part of such a dialogue platform after some resistance?
Well, in the vote of thanks speech Hon Douglas Mwonzora gave during the launch of the second vaccination program in Victoria Falls, stated that “politics of divisive vancour are a thing of the past” He suggested that the political outlook had changed from “political self-aggrandisement” to putting the nation first. He continued to share the following sentiments:
“We don’t want politics of hunger, hate and intolerance. As leaders of the opposition we should work for the betterment of the economy to save our people and also support the vaccination programme.”
Watch a snippet of the Honorable’s speech below:
Mwonzora’s move has been viewed as affirmation of suspicions that the MDC-T has been fraternising with the ruling party in and attempt to wipe out the main opposition party led by Nelson Chamisa.
Some have pointed to that this move could be the same strategy of political survival described by the late President Robert Mugabe as the “Madhuku Strategy.” The only difference in this case would be that instead of the opposition causing havoc in the ruling party as was described by the late ex-President, it is viewed as the ruling party’s attempt at disarming the opposition Party since the 2023 elections are fast approaching.
Watch as the Late President describes the “Madhuku Strategy” below:
Fadzayi Mahere, spokesperson for MDC-A led by Nelson Chamisa had the following sentiments to share regarding this move:
“We will take all necessary steps to stop the attempt by Zanu PF and its surrogates who usurped the will of the people to create a one-party State. The regime must respect the democratic and constitutional rights of the citizens to challenge its policies and offer alternatives for the betterment of the nation,”
However, amidst claims that Mwonzora is being used as a puppet by the ruling party and has joined POLAD, he shared the following sentiment:
“It’s a national event where people unite to fight the pandemic. We have nothing to do with Polad. This is not a Polad event”

]]>MDC-T members seem to be queued up waiting for their turn to join President Emerson Mnangagwa’s Zanu PF. In the forefront are Mr James Makore, one of the founding members of the party and former MDC spokesperson Mr Obert Gutu. They have also served in these capacities:
During the inclusive Government period from, Cde Gutu served as Deputy Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs. He discontinued this role in 2013.
He the went on to assume the vice presidency of the MDC-T following the split that occurred when Mr Morgan Tsvangirai died. He was the then party’s leader Ms Thokozani Khupe’s deputy.
Cde Makore was an MDC-T Senator for Chitungwiza.
These two members have already been welcomed by President Mnangagwa as of March 18 2021.
It is currently being speculated that more MDC-T members are on their way to join the ruling party.
The defection to the ruling party of other former MDC-T legislators, Ms Lillian Timveous and Mr Blessing Chebundo nearly two weeks ago is likely to have instigated the decision made by the two former MDC members.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, the president had this to say:
“These are senior members of the MDC and they have decided individually to come back home. In fact, I should mention that with regards to Cde Makore, he was at the beginning, in the early 60s and 70s, in the national movement with us.
So he has come back home and he said ‘I feel at home ideologically in Zanu PF and want to come back and contribute to the reconstruction of the country”
On Mr Obert Gutu, he continued to share the following sentiments:
“Obert is a young man. He said he has a conscience and he slept over his conscience and came to the conclusion that this party that he was in would not give him satisfaction for the purposes of revolutionarily contributing to the construction, growth and modernisation of Zimbabwe and charting the destination of the people of this country”
Also at the occasion to welcome the duo were Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Zanu PF National Chairman, Cde Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, the ruling party’s Secretary for Security Cde Lovemore Matuke and Masvingo provincial chairman Cde Ezra Chadzamira.
Cde Gutu and Makore felt the support and warm welcome extended by the President and those in attendance. Gutu shared the following remarks:
“We feel we are here to contribute to the development of the country. Speaking entirely for myself, I am not position-oriented. I know some people will say Gutu wants this post or that post, that’s far from it.
We are here to play our part albeit a small part for the development of this country and the Vision which the Second Republic has fashioned for this country, Vision 2030 which is achievable with the right mindset and skills set,”
Senator Makore echoed similar sentiments saying he had returned home.
“We do feel we have to contribute to the economy, we can’t consistently fight without producing any tangible result for the economy and by and large we can be a cog in national development,” he said.

]]>As some MDC supporters had predicted, there was an alleged attempt by the ruling party to arrest Chamisa following his utterances at the virtual gathering. Chamisa did not conceal his intend to expose and deal with all bad governance policies that he pointed out have seemingly become the norm.
He was said to have been detained at Rhodesville Police Station in Harare as a result of his bravado, freeness of speech and call for a united Zimbabwe at the ‘Agenda 2021’ virtual meet.
However, Nelson Chamisa i said to have refuted these claims. In an interview with News Zimbabwe Chamisa said the following:
“The call for unity must never unsettle anyone because great nations thrive on the pillars of the unity. United citizens are the fuel which can deal with the problems and challenges our great nation”
“Zanu PF must not scared of my clarion call for convergence. I am not beating drums of war. I am just calling for unity. Great nations are built on unity. Zimbabwe does not need a partisanship leadership anymore. Yes, you may be Commander-in-Chief constitutionally, but the country now needs a Father-in-Chief,” he said in reference to President Emmerson Mnangangwa.
In reference to the current economic situation, he said,
“Honestly claims that the economy i son a rebound and even declaring (cash) surpluses cannot hold when every citizen has evidence of a collapsing economy.Recovery is not an expression of letters in the newspaper but a felt experience”

]]>Unless Zimbabwe’s opposition puts its act together, the thunder that is going to strike it is still doing push-ups in heaven. Events over the past two years should serve as a wake up call for the splintered and faltering opposition, to snap out of its long slumber and act. For it is in a fine mess.
In this article I deal with the Nelson Chamisa’s component of MDC, for as long as they are using that name. Part 2 will deal with Douglas Mwonzora and his entity.
Chamisa I still contend does not have the character or sobriety to lead Zimbabwe’s opposition, to the once vibrant movement it used to be.
He has brought in too much of his flawed personality to make that possible. Take for instance how he postures as deity and the consequential personalisation of the struggle to a supreme being who is beyond criticism. Even that as it maybe, the bible exhorts us to pray for wisdom, calls us to a place of humility and love as a reflection of our faith in Christ Jesus.
Even harder to fathom that a modern day political party in 2021 has a Papa before whom fellow comrades must kneel, be prayed for to receive their blessing. The spiritualisation of the struggle, instead of working strategies people are fed bible verses, people who belong to their own churches, by default of being Chamisa followers, have to stretch their faith into politics to a guy whose beliefs are otherwise contrary to their own.
The painful result of which have included losing legal rights to the MDC name and assets, there is always a price for deception, pride, mediocrity and arrogance.
Furthermore, for a Christian with a love for humanity, his failure to provide a credible, genuine response to Covid-19, offering national leadership and not politicising or seeking to trivialise a global pandemic.
Almost two years after the 2018 harmonised elections, Zimbabwe’s opposition component led by Chamisa, is stuck in the past, with no visible plan for the future the crucial 2023 elections, which in political terms are just around the corner. No campaign or dialogue for crucial reforms, without which the opposition campaign efforts are dead in the water.
By design stuck in 2018 mode because Chamisa in his vendetta has personalised the election outcome, continuing to parrot calls for legitimacy but offering no realistic roadmap forward or strategy that unites Zimbabweans of all walks of life.
Most civil society organisations, everyone has moved on, Chamisa remains stuck.
Chamisa true to character has chosen to throw the toys out of the pram, his tantrums now a nauseating ritual each time that his lack of leadership is exposed, the legitimacy issue becomes an easy tool for distraction.
The late icon Morgan Tsvangirai’s death left the movement he once valiantly and fearlessly led at sixes and sevens clueless as to how to steer the once great movement forward. A vacuum painfully felt each day.
The opposition that once stood tall globally as a champion of human rights and democratic principles is getting unstuck as it fails within itself to practise what it preaches. There is no brother’s keeper.
Emotions have been high, fingers being pointed, witches found, after Lillian Timveos and Blessing Chebundo recently openly, in broad daylight joined Zanu PF, where they were welcomed by its first secretary President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
A gullible opposition membership is convinced by party leadership that they have crossed over to Zanu PF for money. Chamisa’s supporters take no prisoners in their vile attacks, some who ironically were tormenting us in Zanu PF only a few months ago, our blood fresh on their hands?
Strangely, this also said by beneficiaries of a long commodified opposition movement, how many shirts did Chamisa have at the formation of the MDC?
People who have over the years benefited from the benevolence of kind Zimbabweans and the donor community, not that they possess any brilliance or social verticality.
An activist gets special access to programmes in the University of Zimbabwe, scholarships, rent paid for, others have even had cars bought for them, not to mention those who bought houses. Not many of them know how a CV is written 20 years in struggle largess , and will fail to account for their social status should a genuine lifestyle audit be carried out.
Unlike those like Roy Bennet, I met him in New-York he was tired and distraught, he had lost all, recovering from prison days and a cancer attack he also had many a tales to tell. Story for another day.
In 2005 the late Morgan Tsvangirai called me back home from Europe, I was doing just fine with my life, my children, I am a hard worker, I do not survive on handouts, a life disrupted I regret going back to this day. I cannot cry over spilt milk. Tsvangirai was in trouble, not from external enemies, but internal ones, sabotaging, gossiping, the rot was in the party.
Unlike Chebundo or Timveos, tormented Tsvangirai could not defect from his own party, he mobilised us internally to work at times even with parallel structures, when people pontificate about the 2008 election victory, they do so without a full story.
The rot, corruption, hatred of fellow comrades against each other, the kind of nonsense those like Timveos who are defecting today are tired of.
Dismissing them as just political prostitutes will be costly, a narrative that suits Chamisa well in his grandstanding and deception. He deceives those that only awoke to opposition politics post 2017, they only know Chamisa and a well manicured narrative of who he is, overrated contribution to the struggle, thus they attack without care.
They do not know who Chebundo is, they do not know who the late Makuyana is, they do not know who many others are, that’s how Chamisa has framed it. But then it’s getting undone.
Of particular interest to me is how their characters were impugned or called into question by members of a movement that is haemorrhaging from all angles, in a failing post Tsvangirai transition.
Timveos going in a key province means Zanu PF is doing its maths, 2023 will be too late to start screaming rigging and legitimacy. Timveos was a key member not just in the Province, but at national level possessing an influential global reach, worrisome it should be for the MDC that she is now Mnangagwa’s ally, name calling is not an option – strategy and sobriety are.
The unravelling of the opposition taking place today, does not only have national consequences because Zanu PF remains cunning doing its mathematics, it also has global ramifications.
The MDC was born out of a dream whose time it seemed had come, in global politics and indeed on the African continent, the Berlin Wall had fallen, Apartheid South-Africa collapsed, the talk and calls for multi-party democracy were loud and clear.
These people had no real ideologically binding glue apart from issues with the status-quo at the time, riding on the apparent global winds of change, based on the mistaken notion or assumptions that one party states or nationalist movements were easy to break – for Zimbabwe it has been a blow for blow.
The fixation for the international community was on the late former President Robert Mugabe, there was a strong focus against him, with conclusions that he was at the epicenter of everything that was wrong in Zanu PF and by extension in Zimbabwe’s national politics.
A script today that goes horribly wrong when a senior opposition leader Tendai Biti publicly say…
END OF PART ONE.
Stay tuned for part two.
