This development does not come as a shock to many because ZERA has revised the prices within short intervals before. As of today (25 April 2022) the ZWL prices are $264.77/litre for Diesel 50 and $252.40/litre for Blend –E10. The USD prices are $1.71 for Diesel 50 and $1.63 for Blend-E10.
These price hikes are bound to affect everything else from transport prices to food and it will weigh hard on already struggling Zimbabweans. Recently the prices of mealie meal and bread were increased and the exchange rates of the USD to Bond are ever-increasing.
Many people in Zimbabwe are paid in local currency especially civil servants who already had issues with the government earlier this year when they were negotiating salary increases citing the high cost of living in Zimbabwe.

Diesel goes down from US$1.68 to US$1.60 per litre and petrol is now US$1.59 per litre from US$1.67 set last week. Zera says this will be for the week 21 March to 27 March 2022.
ZERA recently revised fuel prices twice in a space of five days and according to them, the price hike was because of fluctuating prices of oil on the international market caused by the Russia-Ukraine war

This comes as a shock to many as one would not expect a price hike, especially in US dollars. Yet ZERA has announced that the new fuel prices are now $1.68 for Diesel and $1.67 for the blend. In local currency, a litre of diesel is now Z$218.01 and petrol Z$216.78 up from Z$195.99 and Z$195.72 respectively.
ZERA mentioned the increase of oil prices on the international market due to the ripple effects of the war against Ukraine by Russia. International oil prices have jumped significantly over the past week as global sanctions cripple Russia’s ability to export crude oil following its invasion of Ukraine.
The general fear is that these fuel prices increases might get out of hand and we will soon find ourselves paying over 2 US dollars per litre soon. This will also affect the cost of other things like food, transport costs etc. ZUPCO recently increased their ticket prices and this change by ZERA may cause another ticket increase.

]]>The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) is the body responsible for the regulation of energy in Zimbabwe. They are not new to coming under fire from citizens complaining about the “unreasonable” prices of energy. Since the announcement, citizens are already dreading the spiralling effect that normal follow such price hikes.
Other commodities will be expected to start increasing in price. This was seen earlier this year when the President of the National Bakers Association(NBAZ), Dennis Wallah, even attributed the high cost of bread to ZERA as energy prices continued to rise.
