Netone has just announced yet another data price review. By now we all know that review will never be about reducing the price to match the service that is being given. So yes, the price is up again!

While that isn’t too much of a surprise, a question that keeps coming up over and over again when these hikes take place is, “why is POTRAZ allowing such ridiculousness to happen?”

Before we go into that, below are the results of NetOne’s recent price review.

This is what it will cost you to surf the internet for a month on the NetOne network (without including social media bundles):

POTRAZ

For those who don’t know, POTRAZ is an acronym for Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe. This is the board that regulates data prices in Zimbabwe. They are responsible for making sure that the data tariffs set by these mobile network operators are reasonable and justified.

So the question still stands…where is POTRAZ amidst all these data tariffs hikes?

Zimbabwe has reported the highest data tariff prices in our region despite the existence of boards such as POTRAZ. As a result, some Zimbabweans on various social platforms have finally reached a conclusion on this matter and it might just make sense. They have suggested that these unbearable price hikes could possibly be a way of reducing people’s access to the internet because a lot of political awareness and change start as just conversations on the internet.

Remember that November when a revolution started and was organised from the internet? A whole regime was changed and that is the power of the internet.

So it would make sense a lot of sense if this was a way to stop that from happening. With regards to this situation, a social media user (@doctorphill1) commented:

“social media has been and is our weapon as Citizens to spread information pertaining voting for competent leadership.”

These were the same sentiments shared by citizens when the 2022 national budget revealed controversial tax amounts on mobile phone purchases.

Do you agree with this view?

The Mobile Network Operator, Telone is known to be the very affordable in comparison to other service providers such as Econet.

Telone recently announced adjustments in their data tariffs. The adjustments are effective starting on 29 September 2021. However, despite the changes, Zimbabweans seem pleased by the affordability of their packages. The same cannot be said for the Econet Packages that people have complained about so much to the extend that popular journalist Hopewell Chinono chided Zimbabweans for using Econet.

Below are the tariff changes:

The service provider clarified to users that the roll over service is still under suspension. This means that the packages are valid for a month from the day purchased.

Scammers have now targeted the largest mobile network operator, Econet. The scammers have created a page with the Econet logo and cover, even the name except the verification of course, Econet Zimbabwe’s actual Facebook page is verified plus the fake page has zero followers.

A screenshot of the real Econet facebook page

The page undoubtedly aims to target the increasingly data hungry Zimbabweans off guard. The fake Econet page is promising Zimbabweans 15GB of data on sign up and we all know Econet would never do that in their lifetime, that is how we knew the page was fake.

So when one decides to signup they are taken to a website called Jinaka.com(above) which was made to look like Facebook. Don’t panic yet. We also entered fake credentials to see what happens so that you don’t have to. A user is simply redirected to more fake webpages with ads, but at this stage your credentials would have been taken and no 15GB of data was sent to you.

Be careful people!

How would you like a free 500Mb of free data? Well, Zimbabwe’s second largest mobile network operator NetOne is giving subscribers 500Mb of free data when they fund their OneMoney accounts via Zipit.

The new promotion started on the 29th of March and it appears that the mobile operator is trying to entice more users to its mobile money platform which has always played second fiddle to EcoCash. With the prices for data now getting out of reach for many, they might just succeed, depending how long the promotion runs.

Below are the step by step instructions on how to get the 500Mb free data;

Now this is Zimbabwe, of course there’s a catch. To get the free 500MB data you need to move a minimum of ZWL$1000 to be eligible.

An end date for this promotion has not yet been revealed.

Often after being annoyed by some childish tendencies we could have picked up from a friend,  parents would ask “ if your friend jumps off a bridge would you do the same?” 9 times out of 10, like the child that we were, we would inwardly reply “absolutely”. NetOne seems to be adopting the same principle in their business approach.

Following NetOne’s very recent price hikes, customers have been complaining about the drastic changes that were made to the tariffs. Customer’s expressed similar sentiments of disapproval and disappointment across the board. NetOne took it upon themselves to reply to one such user of their network. They had this to say:

“We understand your concern over the recent tariff adjustments. However, the increase was in sympathy with the prevailing business climate where operational costs have gone considerably up. Had this adjustment not been implemented, it could have resulted in serious degradation of the quality of our network and consequently heavily degraded service quality to you our valued customer.”

Does NetOne’s drastic changes in data tariffs reflect this supposed adjustment to “the prevailing business climate?” Is an almost 100% increase in their prices easily justified by changes in the economy? Or did we hit the nail on the head in our “Greedy NetOne” article?

Let’s consider the issue of service degradation. Has NetOne been able to provide the great service that they are now supposedly trying to maintain? If you got a chance to browse our previous NetOne article, you’ll find comments of NetOne users that don’t seem to think so.

What is your opinion on the matter?

Let us know in the comments below.

Right on cue, Netone has done what we had anticipated. Check out these new tariffs.

A large fraction of Zimbabweans have fled from service providers with ruthless data tariffs to seemingly cheaper and better alternatives such as NetOne. However, a recent move by NetOne could possibly have Netone users fleeing again to find even better alternatives. Or could this move just be the straw that broke the camel’s back?

As of March 5 2021, NetOne will be putting in place their new data tariffs. This statement issued on their Facebook page has lead to outrage from the users of their service.

The general sentiment is that NetOne should infact be reviewing their poor network and service provision before considering any sort of review in data tariffs. Most users feel as though the only tariff change that would tally with the service Netone is currently giving would be a reduction of their current data prices.

If you were born and raised in Zimbabwe, history has probably taught you that a “review” can only mean prices are about to soar. Would a hike in prices be justifiable? Well, although NetOne has yet to respond to complaining customers’ sentiments, an analysis of the common complaints NetOne has been receiving can give us an answer. Users who switched to the network because of its cheaper tariffs are now complaining of cheap tariffs without the promised service. Monthly bundles are said to be lasting just 3 days or even less.

Below are some of NetOne customers’ grievances:

In addition to these grievances, NetOne’s internet seems to consistently shut down towards the weekends. This means that if you did pay for data to use over the weekend, there is a high possibility that the data would likely expire before you even got to use it.

So, for now we wait to hear the exact changes NetOne has decided to make to their tariffs, or if they will heed the complaints of their customers. However, one thing is certain, these bad reviews do not coincide with what NetOne boasts for. They describe their organization as “a Zimbabwean mobile network operator with the widest coverage and the lowest rates…[that provides] high speed mobile broadband.

Do you think an increase in tariffs could have a negative impact on NetOne as an organization given the current dissettlement over the issue? Or should they consider refunding customers for the data they bought but were unable to use before making this change?

What’s your verdict on the issue? Let us know in the comment section below
