]]>As a part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 the government has been using various, methods to encourage vaccination. Their efforts have even caused the World Health Organisation to recognise the nation as leading in SADC on their vaccination drive. This is where people start to wonder whether the measures being taken to encourage vaccination have ulterior, perhaps egotistical motives.
Although encouraged, vaccination is supposedly an individual’s personal choice. Denmark even did away with measures such as vaccination following reports of the effects of vaccination on some individuals.
However, in practice it doesn’t seem to be a personal choice. The government itself had previously barred unvaccinated individuals from attending church services and arrested some who were caught on the wrong side of this regulation. Other companies laid out ultimatums concerning vaccination to their employees.
OK Zimbabwe recently joined those employers. Although, they have not given their employees ultimatums, they just sent unvaccinated employees home on unpaid leave. The employees can resume work once they are vaccinated. This leaves employees who are desperate for their jobs with no other choice.
Should such measures be taken to “encourage” vaccination?

]]>When the drive towards vaccination against coronavirus began, many with a Christian background where influenced to believe this might be the mark of the beast. This is one of many school of thoughts on vaccination by church goers. Vaccinating such ones proved to be a challenge.
Another school of thought is that vaccinations aren’t effective. This thought has even been the foundation for Denmark’s eradication of these covid preventative measures.
Following the government’s move allowing churches to open if congregants are vaccinated, it seems some churches are now singing a different tune. About 200 people are already being vaccinated per day at New Highfield Roman Catholic Church in Harare. This has been done to avoid people having to walk to the next vaccination centre which is far.
Those that thought this the government’s decision was just a drive to try and give people no choice but to get vaccinated thought this would happen. Pastors obviously don’t want to be arrested like what happened at Christ Embassy.
In short, if the decision on churches was indeed a move to increase the number of people getting vaccinated, then this is yet another win for the government.

]]>Considering all of the above, no doubt Denmark’s move to abandon all covid-19 preventative measures came as a surprise. The Danish Parliament ruled that coronavirus measures are to be abolished starting on 1 October 2021. No testing will be carried out either. This decision has come amidst a rise in covid cases world over.
Why did the country settle on this seemingly reckless decision?
Denmark’s SSI infectious diseases agency said they still have the herd immunity goal in mind. However the way in which they will achieve it is what is changing. The country will no longer be relying on vaccination to achieve herd immunity.
The agency stated that it must be expected that as people return to their usual day to day activities, new infections will rise. However they emphasised the need to not be alarmed as the new wave will be similar of the flu.
This move also comes during a time were some people are losing trust in vaccines. One of the reasons is that the vaccines were not developed and approved for the prevention of infection with the SARS-COV-2 virus. They are said to only prevent a severe course of the disease.
Studies have shown that those that received the covid vaccine sometimes even have the same viral load upon infection as those who haven’t been vaccinated. With that in mind, a Danish lawyer stated that the pressure being put on individuals to get vaccinated lacks justification and could result in legal implications on corporates that force employees to be vaccinated.

]]>Congregates already displayed dissatisfaction over this move by the government and questioned their true agenda. Now churches have finally spoken with regards to the no jab, no church regulation.
The Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD), stated that the government needed to reconsider as this move could put the country in a serious health disaster. This association is made up of Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference, Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe and the Union for Development of Apostolic and Zionist Churches in Zimbabwe Africa.
The association argued that this regulation would be difficult to implement and monitor given that the health sector is already short staffed. In addition they also raised another issue pertaining to what people have termed “vaccination discrimination”. The statement highlighted that from a theological standpoint that church is expected to welcome everyone without any preconditions. It emphasised that there is no such thing as qualification for church service in the eyes of God.
The ZHOCD has suggested that the Ministry of health issue a detailed statement addressing the grey areas in this law. Some questions to be addressed would be the number of attendees allowed and how vaccination clearance affects those below the age of 18.

]]>Fortunately, the people of Malawi, where this event will be taking place, were not too dissatisfied over the matter. Although some highlighted that this shouldn’t even be dressed as a ceremony of such stature, many were not fazed. The popular sentiment is perfectly embodied by the comment that simply stated, “our people love ceremonies.”
View the program of the event below:

Some Zimbabweans were quick to express sentiments implying that Zimbabwe and Malawi were in the same WhatsApp group. “We love a ceremony and ribbon-cutting” remarked some Zimbabweans.
Apparently, this is not a new phenomenon in Africa. We previously covered the story of a Kenyan MP who hosted a ceremony to launch a TV set. Read about that here.

]]>This Indian Covaxin vaccine is similar to the Sinopharm and Sinovac previously received from china in that it uses an inactivated form of the virus to generate the immune response in the recipient.
Commenting on the issues of the vaccines arrival, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Air Commodore Dr Jasper Chimedza, said:
“We are going to the delivery of 35000 doses of covid19 Covaxin donated by the Indian Government, and will be received by the president.”
He also added that the remaining batch of 40 000 vaccines will be delivered at a later undisclosed date.
Zimbabwe’s government is targeting to vaccinate at least 60 percent of the population (10 million people) to achieve herd immunity. In order to achieve this result the government is waiting on vaccines from a number of countries and companies.
Zimbabwe is among the first countries in Africa to vaccinate their citizens.
Approximately 55000 in Zimbabwe have received the vaccination thus far.

]]>The Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting showcased, on their twitter page, a video of the President present as the consignment of the Sinopharm vaccines arrived. President Mnangagwa announced that the consignment consisted of 400 000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccines.
95 000 more doses are said to follow. These will include 75 000 inactivated Covaxin from India and 20 000 doses of the Sputnik V vaccines from Russia. US$100 million has also been set aside by the government for the procurement of the vaccines.
President Mnangagwa shared the following remarks on this occasion,
“The fact that we are the only country in Africa which has to date received the second batch of the vaccine doses from China, attests to the strong, comprehensive and strategic nature of our partnership.”
It is also reported that the government intends to put church leaders at the forefront of receiving the first jabs out of this second batch of vaccines.
A citizen’s comment on this development summarized what might be most people’s sentiments on this issue. It simply said “kkk violence”
With the resistance portrayed by a large number of citizens could this move be another attempt of coercing the masses into getting vaccinated?
The influence of the church and their leaders is no secret. Even Hitler understood this and some historians point out that he at some point made the reading of the Mein Kempf (his political manifesto) mandatory even among congregants.
While we are not comparing anyone to the vile dictator, we are highlighting the indisputable influence of church leaders on the masses. Could this be a tool being used to compel citizens to be vaccinated?
What are your thoughts on the matter?
