On the 20th of June 2021, the government set out to demolish the structures at Mbare Musika. These included makeshift buildings used by small companies, people’s homes and other structures used by vendors.
Everything that wasn’t a legal structure was destroyed in a bid to clean out the city. However, not everyone was happy with this move. In a country were the rate of unemployment is high, most Mbare residents depended on vending for their livelihoods. Now that the demolitions took place, most people are stuck.
Others have openly stated that they will be returning to their previous careers. A man was recorded warning people that thieves will now be returning full force since their source of livelihood has been stripped.
